We caught up with the brilliant and insightful John Belanger a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi John, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to go back in time and hear the story of how you came up with the name of your brand?
We wanted a name that would represent and resonate with everyone who enjoys being outside and doing outdoor activities.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
We are ‘The Rugged Outdoorsmen’ a father and son team who Field Test outdoor equipment and provide feedback of our findings on social media. We have a partnership with three brands, TimberTote – Single Log Campfires, M-TAC – Outdoor clothing & equipment, and Torege – Sunglasses. We’ve worked with more than a dozen other brands in our first two years of business, and we have a lot of fun together doing this.
What we are most proud of is the fact that when we started this together, Mike was only 10 yrs old, so you guessed it, he’s only 12 now.
We have a passion for spending time together outside, and that’s what makes this special for us, because we go out and have a great time together testing this gear and doing reviews about it. It’s fun for us, and that makes it all worthwhile.
Do you have any insights you can share related to maintaining high team morale?
Our advice is to make decisions together, as a team, whenever possible. A great team should meet frequently and brainstorm together about ideas to better the business and steer its direction.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
Our goal is to be an integral part of the growth of our partners, and see their businesses thrive through our efforts. We believe that in order to achieve success, you have to first help others succeed. This is a philosophy we strongly believe in.
