We recently connected with JOHN BARTON and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, JOHN thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Was there a defining moment in your professional career? A moment that changed the trajectory of your career?
In 2006 I was let go from my job as an insurance agent here in San Antonio. I had worked many years for the company and was making a good living and comfortable. I was seeing that I needed to go back to school to better my opportunities and decided that if I’m going back to school it might as well be for something big. I was weighing medical school and dental school and ended up choosing dental school because it would be four years and done vs medical school was four years and then another four years residency. I first had to get my bachelors…..I only had 13 hours college credit…so I started at a community college and then transferred to UTSA. I graduated in 2010 and took the dental admission test and didn’t do very well. I recommitted and studied for the test and again took it and applied to multiple dental schools. I was accepted for the year 2012 at the age of 37 this was a huge career change. It was not easy going back to school with two children under the age of 8 and two more coming during my educational pursuit. After 4 years of dental school, I became a dentist at the age of 41 with four children and a wife. My wife has been a great support through all of this.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
After graduating from dental school, I started working as an associate with hopes of buying out the owners but that went south and I had to find another job. After a few years on another job and commuting long distances, I found work near home and was able to take over a practice of my own in the year 2020. Building your own business as a healthcare provider has been challenging too but I have been blessed.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
Getting let go from insurance industry and starting fresh working towards becoming a dentist has really proven my resilience. I had to keep pushing forward even when life or challenges would deter a person.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
The most effective strategy for growing clientele would be to treat others like you want to be treated, do the right thing, and word of mouth.
