We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful John Authier. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with John below.
Hi John, thanks for joining us today. Was there a defining moment in your professional career? A moment that changed the trajectory of your career?
The pivotal moment in my career and life was when I sought help for my alcohol addiction. Despite years of struggling with this issue, I initially rejected professional assistance, convinced that my self-discipline and willpower were sufficient to overcome it. Amid a promising fitness career, I realized I was operating below my full potential. Embracing support and committing to sobriety have significantly enhanced my career, relationships, and mental well-being.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
At 32, I am married and a father to two young boys. Entering the fitness industry at 18, my upbringing was marked by a dysfunctional household where both parents battled alcoholism, leading to periods of homelessness. Discovering the fitness lifestyle during my teenage years proved transformative, instilling in me confidence and self-respect. Today, I guide my clients towards a better life, emphasizing not just physical fitness but mental well-being. Since embracing sobriety nearly a year ago, my focus has shifted towards aiding other individuals grappling with addiction through healthy fitness and nutrition practices. My driving passion and purpose lie in facilitating mental and physical transformations. I firmly believe that nutrition and fitness represent areas where we have full control, making them ideal starting points during challenging times. By striving to be the best version of oneself, I am convinced that all facets of life can experience significant enhancement.
Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
I have relied on Andy Frisella and Alex Hormozi as my primary sources for business and life guidance. Over the years, I have consistently tuned into their podcasts and delved into their books, which have been instrumental in cultivating a resilient mindset and fostering discipline in my endeavors.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
One year ago, my wife and I were on the brink of opening our own gym when I found myself spiraling downward into a dark place. Struggling with thoughts of ending my life and engaging in self-destructive behaviors, I hit rock bottom. Seeking help, I underwent treatment at Refine Recovery in Beverly Hills, CA, where I underwent intensive therapy and attended AA meetings. Following this transformative period, I made the decision to return to competitive bodybuilding after an eight-year hiatus. Remarkably, I achieved a top three placement. Since then, I have successfully maintained my sobriety, expanded my personal training business, and become a source of inspiration and support for others.
