Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to John Alex Vespa . We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
John Alex , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. To kick things off, we’d love to hear about things you or your brand do that diverge from the industry standard
Nomadic Naturals is proud to lead the charge for companies to think beyond single use products and into a more mindful way of consuming and doing business. That’s where the idea to create Multi-Purpose personal care products came from. Simple products with a variety of uses for those looking to consume less and have a less waste lifestyle. Plus as an added bonus, more freedom and less to carry around.
I’ll give you the example I use most. The Spray that I crafted originally as a bug repellent, can now be used for deodorant to disinfectant as well as the intended bug repellent. This means 1 product and a minimum of 3 uses.
We only think we need more stuff because that’s what the media and big businesses sell us, so that can gain more profit.
It’s time to do things in a more holistic way and lead with intention over profit.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Sure. I got into the personal care industry in the early 2000s when an ex introduced me to soap making. I then started making my own toothpaste, cleaners, bug repellent and so on. I had never intended to start a personal care product business until I realized there weren’t any good dog products out there. That’s when the ball started to form, products for people and pets! Then while formulating and researching ingredients, and the industry, I had the realization that these products I was making could be used for SO MANY THINGS! To my surprise, no one else was doing this, and still aren’t! There’s a lot of education that goes into the concept of Multi-Purpose body care/ personal care product than I thought and it’s been so much fun to learn and teach people. I’m grateful all the time that is is what I get to do.
Through all of this I’ve realized that these products are only the stepping stones to a real revolution and movement to consume more mindful. To educate about proper product packaging. How bad our recycling systems are and ultimately that composting is what we need to creat a better, cleaner planet.
Using plants as a way to heal ourselves and the planet.
I constantly battle whether being in businees is actually eco-friendly or sustainable, and then I remember the bigger picture of giving back. That’s all I want to do with Nomadic Naturals.
To show there’s always a different path to life, if you want it and that you’re not alone on your journey.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
The biggest and most drastic pivot was changing my businesses name from Bushwhack Life, which no one understood and I couldn’t explain easily, to Nomadic Naturals after 3 years. It was the best pivot cause it all made sense once I did that.
Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
I’m generally more of a philosophy and personal growth book person. However these 2 books shaped how I operate as a person and business, “let my people go surfing” and “atomic habits”. I prefer podcast cause you get to here the person speaking their authentic self and get more nuggets of wisdom in a condensed version. “Build with Rob”, “founder to mentor”, and “school or greatness” are 3 I really enjoy. You get to hear about the person behind the company along with the journey of their business or brand.
