We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Johannes Serna a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Johannes, thanks for joining us today. Before we get into specifics, let’s talk about success more generally. What do you think it takes to be successful?
Well it all depends on what your definition of success is. Everyone’s answer may be different and my definition comes from Earl Nightingale which is “Success is a progressive realization of a worthy ideal”. I would also like to quote the following definition from Master Ryuho Okawa from his book “The Laws of Success” which I recommend everyone take a look at because it gives the perspective from a spiritual view.
Success is eternal growth.
Success is eternal progress.
Success issues from eternal passion.
Success arises from eternal courage.
Success arises from eternal effort.
Success creates eternal value.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Hello everyone my name is Johannes Serna originally from Queens, New York. I got in the industry of guerilla marketing about 6-7 years ago through a close friend in the industry. Guerilla marketing to give a broad definition would be posting or advertising without permission. A bunch of big companies and music artist as well as product brands use this way of marketing because it is more cost effective compared to advertising legally with big billboards or commercials. Some big companies use both legal and illegal ways to promote their business. Guerilla marketing has been around since the 1860’s and possibly earlier than that. In some ways it can be seen as a form of graffiti. In this industry there is plenty of competition looking to control the street advertising game. I also recently got into doing vinyl installations as well which would now be the more legal way of doing things.
My work helps big and small business advertise without having to spend as much. I also travel for clients who are looking to advertise in cities out of state like L.A., Nashville, Virginia, Boston, Washington D.C, Miami, Philadelphia etc. Depending on what the client wants I can set up street teams to help advertise besides using posters there can be flyers being handed out or stickers being placed all over.
One discipline I can say I built from working in this industry to is that I get started early. Although I can choose to work whatever time I desire I have built the habit of waking up first thing in the morning before the sun is out and get my day started. I am able to avoid traffic and I work much faster because I have to travel from location to location with this kind of work. It feels great to know that I was able to get my work finished before 10 am some days and was able to earn someone’s weekly paycheck in just a few hours. I am beyond grateful for this opportunity and grateful I get to use my time left in being productive in other ways.

Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
I was never a reader growing up and thought it was stupid and a waste of time. It wasn’t till after I finished high school that I read my first book in its entirety. Now I see the value in reading books especially books of truth. I never got into any non fiction or story books I started leaning more towards self development and books on spirituality. I would highly recommend any finance book from Master Ryuho Okawa such as “The Laws of Success” “Prosperity Thinking” “The Laws of Creation” or “The Laws of The Mind” which is a special book that can only be found at Happy Science temples which is a interview with the spirit of Napoleon Hill. I would also recommend books such as “Think and Grow Rich” by Napoleon Hill, “The Power of Positive Thinking” by Norman Vincent Peale “How To Win Friends and Influence People” by Dale Carnegie. My view on what is reality completely changed once I started reading Happy Science books which are books of Truth. The author Master Ryuho Okawa has published over 3,200 books and so far I have read over 100 of his books. According to Okawa reading 100 of his books is equivalent 10,000 other books. Through Okawas books my views of life have completely and I now have a much higher understanding of things in this world and beyond.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My overall goal and mission is to to build temples throughout the world that have the teachings of Happy Science. Please don’t confuse Happy Science with Scientology they are completely different. The name may possibly throw people off but the teachings are very powerful and these teachings will guide and prepare humanity for the upcoming space age and beyond. Another goal I have is to save as many people as possible. To some it may sound ridiculous but a majority of us are walking around clueless as to what happens next. I believe it has become my job to help awaken humanity the best I can before I return to the other world. We are all seeking answers to questions and I believe Happy Science has the answers to a majority of questions we have which is why I have dedicated my life to spreading the truth to the world.
