Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Johanna Salazar. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Johanna thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Setting up an independent practice is a daunting endeavor. Can you talk to us about what it was like for you – what were some of the main steps, challenges, etc.
In my previous career I was in the pharmaceutical industry. While I was working in this field, I felt like I wasn’t being true to my beliefs in food as medicine. Not only did I feel bogged down by my career, but I was also dealing with extreme gut issues and hormonal imbalances that doctors didn’t know how to best treat my symptoms; so, they took a shortcut and gave me birth control. This made me realize how broken our healthcare system is and there are not many health professionals that take their time to meet with a patient and find the root cause of their ailment. This led me to go back to school to become a registered dietitian and find ways to heal the body by using a food as medicine approach. Once I passed my license exam, I opened up my virtual practice. I felt an inclination to help people heal from the inside out. I had to further my knowledge on functional medicine by taking classes on how to use certain tests and protocols for a total body healing. Advice I would give a young professional is to start and stop overthinking. Perfection leads to procrastination.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Coming from a pharmaceutical background, I decided to go for a food as medicine approach for healing myself and my clients. Considering that I suffered from IBS, leaky gut, PCOS, food sensitivities, extreme fatigue, acne, and constant inflammation, I use tests to determine exactly what’s going on inside a person’s body and find the root cause of their symptoms. I make sure my clients feel confident and free in their bodies again (or for the first time). My specialties are gut health, hormone balancing, autoimmune diseases, weight management, diabetes, and detoxing from toxins in our environment. Unlike many health practitioners in our healthcare system, I take my time to educate, speak, and listen to my clients. I make sure they get the proper care that the healthcare system has failed to give them. I’m proud at how I’ve seen results in my clients and how great they feel after working with me—this makes it all worthwhile.
Putting training and knowledge aside, what else do you think really matters in terms of succeeding in your field?
Helpful skills for succeeding in the healthcare field are communication and listening. If you know how to speak to people, you know how to market yourself. Making sure that you’re getting your point across effectively and listening to others attentively, will make you an even more successful business owner. You can’t have a business if you don’t have clients and you can’t have clients if you don’t know how to communicate and listen. People want to feel seen and heard. These skills will also help in networking with the right people.

Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
I’m a big fan of Dr. Joe Dispenza’s work. His book ‘Becoming Supernatural’ has helped me tap into what I want for my future and my business. His work also got me in the habit of meditating every morning before I start my day. Meditating has helped me have a clear vision of what I want every day. Another book that helped me become more aligned with myself is ‘Show Up As Her’ by CiiCii. Her book and podcasts have helped me center myself as a woman and find my purpose in healing people.
