We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Johanna-Rosalye Luna a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Johanna-Rosalye , thanks for joining us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
I would say that at some level I always knew a path to a creative career was inevitable. My creative side was always present growing up, especially writing. At a young age I remember drawing and writing poems or stories. There was a moment in my high school English class during my sophomore year where my teacher, Mr. Thompson, told me that I had a talent for writing, that I had something special and to not let it go. However, it wasn’t until my senior year in high school, where I had the same English teacher reminding me of my spacial talent that I decided to study journalism in college. I have not looked back since then, it is this motivation and taking a chance that has led me to where I am today. I am so grateful to Mr. Thompson for helping me see my talent at young age and waking up a passion that I would one day call a career.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your background and context?
I am a bilingual Broadcast and Multimedia Journalist and founder of Insight Sports Network.
I started in the industry 11 years ago, in 2011, when I met the President and CEO of The Hispanic Heritage Baseball Museum Hall of Fame, Gabriel ‘Tito’ Avila, when the Arizona Diamondbacks hosted the MLB All-Star Game. I had signed up as volunteer for the event and came across the museum’s exhibit while touring the MLB FanFest. We began to talk baseball where he then offered the opportunity to join the organization as a columnist. From there, the Museum continued to grow, I become a correspondent for the museum, hosted ‘Al Punto de la Pelota’ podcast, which then led us to the launch of the museum’s network. It was during this time in which I met PLR from The Sports Kave while working a Diamondbacks and invited me to be a guest on this radio show, The Kave Show. This opportunity then led to joining The Sports Kave as a correspondent and explore a future career in radio.
After 8 years with The Hispanic Heritage Baseball Museum Hall of Fame it was time to explore other opportunities. It was then that I found a new love in broadcasting. I continued on with The Sports Kave as a correspondent and making radio appearances. I would also go on to make guest appearances on other sports radio and podcasts shows. I then learned that I wanted to do something more in sports, I wanted to make a larger impact in sports and in journalism, I knew I was meant for something more.
During my work with the museum and The Sports Kave, I had a blog ‘More Than Simply Baseball’ where I would digest the latest news in MLB. ‘More Than Simply Baseball’ became ‘More Than Simply Sports’ where I would expand to writing about NFL, NBA and other major sports. In 2016, realizing how much I had fallen in love with being on-air I launched the ‘More Than Simply Sports’ podcast.
Fast forward to 2018, I went on to rebrand the podcast and decided to launch ‘Insight Sports Network’ with the angle of translating sports to the core. The goal is to go beyond the statistics and dive into the news story and the athlete. Along with the website I launched ‘Insight Sports Talk’, a weekly podcast which can also be lived streamed through Facebook and YouTube. My co-host Edward Cole and I, not only dive into the latest in sports, but also invite veteran athletes, broadcasters and journalists to give their take on the topic of conversation. With my continued love for sports, I wanted to reached an under served market, the Hispanic (Spanish-language) market. In 2021, I launched ‘Punto Deportivo’ a Spanish-language sports podcast. Much like ‘Insight Sports Talk’, in ‘Punto Deportivo’ I not only report on the latest sports news but also invite fellow broadcasters and journalists to talk hot topics in the world of sports. It is here where I had the opportunity to have Arturo Ochoa, the Spanish voice for the Phoenix Suns, as a guest on ‘Punto Deportivo’ during the Suns road to the NBA Finals and a working relationship would begin. Arturo would go on to offer me the opportunity to join the Phoenix Suns broadcast team for La Mejor Arizona for the 2021-22 season as a color analyst and half-time show host. Beginning April 23, 2022 you can listen ‘Punto Deportivo’ on La Onda 107.5FM/1190AM every Saturday at 11am.
Insight Sports Network is launching ‘Insight Sports Network Radio’ in May where we will bring you a series of sports programming and spin-offs from ‘Insight Sports Talk’ and more. Visit our website to stay up to date on the latest news and updates on the network radio launch. In the meantime, you can download ‘Insight Sports Talk’ from all major podcast platforms.
Also, while building Insight Sports Network, during the pandemic I revisited the journalist in me for an itch that just would go away. I have always had an curious and investigative side to me, looking to learn more about about a person or topic. It is this curiosity that lead me to the launch of ‘Insight Notion’, looking to expand your notion beyond the ordinary. Insight Notion is about expanding the everyday persons knowledge in vast subjects, thoughts, opinions and more. ‘Insight Notion’ podcast and website is relaunching this Summer.
You can also read my work on vivaphoenix.com where I bring you feature stories about valley influencers making an impact. Starting April 11, 2022 you can tune into La Onda 107.5 FM/1190 AM every morning and afternoon where I bring you up to speed on the latest in sports and more.
I am so grateful and fortunate for all my experiences, people and events throughout my journey. I have had the opportunity to work with and interview such great talent and covered major events such as the Gold Cup, WNBA Finals, MLB All-Star Game, MLB Postseason, and much more. There is still so much more to come. Be sure to follow and tune in for future projects.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
One of my mission’s throughout my creative journey is to inspire others in the industry, to set an example and pave a way for those following in my footsteps, especially women. Journalism is a tough industry as it is, it is a male dominated industry, which can make it difficult for women to breakthrough. It is because of my vision, my mission, and the role models in my life that have kept me pushing forward and I want to be there for others to help them along their journey. Just as others have and continue to share their resources and support with me, I strive to do the same for others.

What do you find most rewarding about being creative?
The most reward thing of being a creative is seeing my dreams come to reality. As a creative I a dream a lot, there is so much I want to accomplish in life. I like to aim for the impossible, so when those dreams, especially childhood dreams come true it’s a feeling you can’t explain, especially when things come full circle in your life. Seeing your dreams come to reality let’s you see that you can create your own reality and realize that nothing is impossible. There is a quote from Walt Disney that I remind myself of everyday, “All your dreams can come true if you have the courage to pursue them’. When your dreams come true it is the best and most rewarding feeling in the world. Never give up on your dreams.
