Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Johanna Hunt. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Johanna thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What was it like going from idea to execution? Can you share some of the backstory and some of the major steps or milestones?
A lot of people who are wanting to start a business are thinking to themselves, what can I do to make a lot of money. I was a little different. I was very clear on the lifestyle I was wanting to create for myself and my children, and then I kept myself open to the possibilities of what form that could manifest in.
As I created a vision for my life, opportunities started to flow to me. I started reading books about passive and residual income, how to create a 4 day workweek, and the compound effect of performance based habits.
I started to learn how I needed to train my brain to think differently about the way I make money and the habits I would need to adopt to make that happen. I began attending different events in my city to connect with other like minded entrepreneurs and learn what they were doing, and I followed online influencers in specific niches of interest to me to learn about their story and what path they had taken to create a freedom life.
At this time I had just taken a 2 month leave to be home with my first born daughter, so this was not really the ideal time for me to be creating a major change in my life, but she was a huge driving factor in why I had to find a way and my children are why I have persisted for the last 12 years.
I put aside any excuses I had…not enough time, not enough money, not enough family support…and I created time in my day. and the resources I needed to learn and take action on what I was learning. That often meant waking up earlier, using her nap times (which were almost non existent), and my evenings either online learning, or attending an event. She often attended events with me and as I started to develop a clear idea of the direction I was wanting to go and I had a business model in place, her and I would frequent community events together for moms and children, where I continued to network and grow an organic list of leads for my business.
I would add every new contact I made to social media where I would share my business journey and updates through stories and videos. I created resources that would encourage my new network to take a next step with me and join my list. And that’s where I would sell my products and services to my qualified leads.
I did a number of things in the beginning to find leads, as the online space was still developing. I often spent my weekends at networking events, home presentations and trade shows, while I also developed zoom presentations and Facebook events. The vision for me was to be able to fully sustain my business from my phone and laptop and eventually eliminate in person events all together.
I didn’t have a lot of money to invest, but I invested everything I could and I created resources for others and worked hard to provide value in exchange for clients.
As I build more and more credibility through my content and connecting with my followers, my audience grew organically, as did my referrals, and my need to leave home to generate new leads for my business diminished.
Over time, my brand expanded, and many new opportunities for me to serve my audience came organically. I had followers reach out asking to join my affiliate programs, asking for me to create courses they could follow and to coach them one to one.
So in finding my own need for freedom and lifestyle, I created a demand for others who were seeking the same level of freedom from a linear income. In sharing my journey authentically and transparently, the right people followed and became my clients. And from staying clear on my vision for the lifestyle I wanted and a business that matched this lifestyle, new opportunities manifested for me.
We can’t always see the full path ahead of us, but we only need to see the next step. Most of the things I’ve created over the last decade I had not intended on when I was getting started. But I took faith based and inspired action in the direction I wanted to go, and with each step I learned what worked and what didn’t. I would continue to do what worked and seek the patterns in the process, so I could develop streamlined methods to organize and systemize my business so I could scale and then eventually teach others how to do the exact same thing.
Of course we all want this to be a smooth and seamless process, and now a days there are many coaches and courses teaching these methods, but back then it was a little more challenging to find the information. I did start to make money in my first month of business but it took me about 6 months before I started making income passively, and I’ll never forget the first $6 I made from a transaction I didn’t facilitate from a complete stranger on the internet.
I had invested in a course to set up a blog and a lead generation system so that I could drive traffic from my social media content to growing an email list, and then automating my entire sales process with email marketing so I wouldn’t have to continue to make sales belly to belly or attend events when I would have rather been home with my family.
So many people give up if they don’t see an immediate result, Many won’t wait 6 months or a year to make a sale, because we live in a society that expects instant gratification even when they’ve invested very little. I chose to see each interaction as a sign that I was on the right path, even though I wasn’t seeing instant income from my system. And I celebrated every dollar that made it’s way to my bank account.
That $297 investment and $6 profit eventually turned into over $3M in passive sales, and I reinvested that money into 1000’s of dollars more in learning digital marketing and passive strategies to eventually fine tune my own methods and simplify the process for my students and clients, and then make that information available and affordable to more parents like myself who wanted to come home to their families.
So instead of asking yourself how you can make a lot of money, find a problem you have that you would love to solve. Find a solution to your problem, and turn your pain into purpose and your purpose into profit. Make sure that this aligns with the vision you have for the life you want to live. Then focus on the end goal and take the necessary steps along the way that lead you closer each day. Be ok with being a beginner, with failing forward, and learning along the way. It’s easy to get caught up in the destination but the gifts you seek are in the process of becoming who you were meant to be all along.
Johanna, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Heyyyy I’m Johanna!
Like Yo! Hanna. But more elegant. I’m a free spirited, adventurer and story creator, dancing with infinite intelligence… living a beautiful life I created with my daughters in Vancouver and showing you how to write your own story,
I help online entrepreneurs leverage digital marketing to monetize their assets and diversify their income while creating more time freedom and financial stability.
Through my courses and 1:1 coaching and consulting, I teach you tangible skills, driven by theory with a twist of the laws of the Universe to help you manifest results in your business and build a life you love. My teachings involve passive income systems and methods for building, growing and scaling a Magnetique Brand, attracting dream clients through Magnetique Marketing and lead mastery, and the systems and processes you need to leverage to have time freedom and stop trading your time for money.
I am also an established Affiliate Marketer and leader in the Network Marketing space, providing entrepreneur minded people an opportunity to mentor with me for free inside of established partnerships with the most up and coming companies. This is an excellent way for the people in my world to diversify their income streams and assets, or to find their way into the business world.
I bring with me 25 years of experience as an Entrepreneur and Marketer, 12 years in Digital Marketing and making money online, and a lot of heart as a woman who loves to challenge the status quo, test the limits, and help set more people free from living in the confines of the matrix.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
As someone who only had 200 friend on Facebook and a reputation to party, I had to make up in numbers what I lacked in skill. I didn’t have a niched network ready to buy from me. I had to create a vision of the version of me who had the vision of the version of the life I wanted and then act as that person each day. That meant learning how that version walks and talks, and the habits she possessed. It meant having to find mentors I could emulate and learn from. I had to be all in on me, because honestly, no one else was.
So I put myself in rooms where the people I wanted to work with were hanging out. I started to speak their language and to act the part I was looking to play. I had to be bold and take risks and say yes before I had a chance to even wonder if I was ready…trusting that I would find a way and figure things out.
I worked harder then most to over deliver value and to follow through on the commitments I made to myself and the commitments I made to others. If I didn’t know what to do next, I found someone who did. I became resourceful, which made me a resource for others.
My consistent omnipresence online, inside of Facebook groups, and at Networking events made me recognizable, and my transparent and authentic message made me relatable. My willingness to learn, grow and expand myself daily made me feel more confident in myself, and in leading myself, others began to follow my leadership.
I stayed consistent in my messaging so I would become known for that 1 thing and that developed my reputation, my credibility and my influence. That’s how I had my audience create my next steps and offers by requesting to work with me in different ways and then discerning which opportunities would align with my vision.
There are 2 main strategies that developed and grew my audience and credibility faster than any other strategy and I still use these methods today…live video and freemiums. This is what helps you stand out, allow people to see who you are, and what working with you feels like before they invest a dime. Do these correctly and working with you will be a no brainer for them.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
As an entrepreneur you have to develop a thick skin. Your resilience and your ability to persist is everything. I went through some pretty challenging times over the last 12+ years of building my business. When I was getting started, we were facing bankruptcy, and I had a 2 month old child on my hip. We moved 6 times in 3 years with children under the age of 3. I went through a divorce and as a new independent mother, I had to move my children from Europe and away from family to start our lives over in Vancouver where I was alone. Shortly after the pandemic hit and I wasn’t able to see any family for 3 years as they all lived across a closed border.
I faced a lot of personal challenges in this time that spilled into my business. I hit burn out and I went through many dark nights as I tried to understand myself and the world better. There were many times I wanted to give up all together, not just in my business. This time in my life sent me into a deep healing journey that changed the way I see myself and others, and the way I show up in business.
This new version of me tried to fit myself into the same boxes I had my past version and my income slowly and then steadily began to decline as the cost of living was rapidly increasing. I had to sell things and take on debt after 6+ years of living in a cashflow reality. I did many things to pivot my offerings and services as the online industry, especially network marketing, faced some significant changes and challenges. I changed many things within my business model, but those changes took time and I got to a point where I wasn’t sure anything was working.
It got worse before it got better. I had creditors freeze my funds, services providers threaten disconnection and I was 5 days overdue on my rent for the first time in my life. I wasn’t sure exactly how I was going to keep a roof over our head.
But I persisted in faith and I kept myself open to opportunities while I fell back on my habits, and I took work where ever I could to pay the bills.
One morning in meditation and prayer a women popped into my mind as I was asking for an answer. I looked her up to see what she was doing. We had worked together previously in another partnership. I saw the opportunity and I jumped in immediately. It was exactly what I had been looking for and I did not hesitate.
In less than 3 months I was able to completely transform my financial situation, build a team of over 700 affiliates and take what I learned in that process and incorporate it into my teachings.
Not everything we do will be long term. We will always face uncertainty and change in our business. Success is not a straight line and it has ebbs and flows. There will be economic changes and challenges, new competitors, and new opportunities in your space. You will face challenges and hardship in your personal life that will impact your business.
The inner work you do, the strength you cultivate within yourself when things are tough, is what creates unshakeable confidence and boldness. Self trust is your greatest asset.
