We were lucky to catch up with Joey Van Ryan recently and have shared our conversation below.
Joey, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you tell us about a time where you or your team really helped a customer get an amazing result?
I love creating fun and dope pieces for those that love my pieces. When it comes to making custom projects for new clients, you always want to go above and beyond. I’ve met really wonderful people through this and it is rewarding seeing them in my custom looks I’ve created.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am a Dallas based designer who creates fun, dope, and custom clothing for everyone. I’ve worked in the industry for a while after obtaining my degree in Fashion Design. Throughout my career, I wanted to start a brand of my own. I’ve actually made different genre of clothing, from ready to wear, custom evening, drag gowns, performance wear to even swim wear. I like to dabble into almost any type. What I’m most proud of is probably having returning customers wanting new designs or custom ones as well. I am very grateful and passionate about what I do.
How did you build your audience on social media?
Know your audience. Simple and a strong thing to start with for sure. In the beginning, I tried hard to obtain everyone’s attention, when I should have focused on who I cater too and who is my ideal clientele. I have a-lot of LGBTQ+ clients and as a member of the community, it is a blast to work with them. I’ve also made really cool new friends!
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
I’m at a point in my life where I cannot compare other’s success to mine. I love what I do and of course I work in an industry that’s saturated with other local designers. I think as small business owners, we should support and lift each other up. I’ve met other local designers and I’m glad for their success and victories. We all strive to do what we love and that’s the most important thing. Am I at a point where I’d think I’d be a big brand name? No, sadly haha, but that’s not the end of the world. I still do what I do, because I love to design and that makes my day.
