We recently connected with Joey Taylor and have shared our conversation below.
Joey, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
Starting a clean beauty brand business was never on my radar. I loved being a stay at home mom and occasionally working dental hygiene part time. When I found my self barely being able to pay my bills I had to get creative. I started making small batches of natural skincare products. They were simple with nourishing ingredients I trusted. At first I used them as gifts to show my appreciation without spending money I didn’t have. But as I worked late into the night, blending oils and testing formulas, I realized something: my own sensitive Irish, English, Norwegian skin, which had always been sensitive, was finally calming down.
Since I was using my own products daily, my friends began noticing my skin was very healthy. They wanted to try some also. Soon these friends were offering to pay me for these products. That was the moment I saw an opportunity- one that scared me just as much as it excited me.
Starting a business felt impossible. I had no extra money, no safety net and my kids who depended on me. But I also knew I couldn’t stay stuck. So I took the risk. I scraped together what little I had to buy better ingredients, made samples, and asked my friends to test them. Their feedback helped me refine my formulas and little by little, word spread. Orders started coming in, one by one. And each sale felt like a small victory.
It wasn’t easy. There were (many) moments of doubt. I learned more by mistakes than successes for sure. As my skin issues were improving, my customers leaving positive reviews, and knowing the ingredients I was using were helping so many have healthier skin, I knew I was on my right path. I hope my resilience teaches my kids that no matter how hard life gets, we always have the power to create something beautiful from it. And as a bonus, have beautiful skin too!

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’m a local mom of three kids in Orange County. I work as a dental hygienist and love helping my patients achieve optimal oral and overall health. Healthy food and skin products are essential for every body.
A few years ago, when I found myself suddenly a single mom, I initially started making bath soak salts and homemade oils and lotions as heartfelt gifts for friends and the kid’s teachers. What began as a creative and personal way to show my appreciation and love soon turned into a journey of self care. I started formulating products for my own sensitive, Irish descent skin. Struggling to find natural skincare that truly worked for me, without harmful chemicals that would irritate my sensitive skin, I carefully crafted gentle, nourishing blends that brought real results. When friends noticed the difference and asked what I was using, they eagerly became my testers, helping refine and perfect each product. Their enthusiasm and encouragement inspired me to turn my passion into a business – one rooted in purity, effectiveness and a deep commitment to skin-loving ingredients.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
There was a night when the kids were finally asleep, I was going over bills at the kitchen table. I really did not know how I was going to make the ends meet financially. I was exhausted and scared. I wanted to stay brave for my kids but reality hits when the house is quiet. I was determined to figure out how to pay these bills and still live a happy life. I realized I was always happy when I was working with my oils and making skincare for gifts since I did not have extra money to go out a buy a present. I did not just want to make products to sell. I wanted my customers to believe in my hand crafted face polish and face oil. I wanted my customers to absolutely love my bath soak salts as much as I did. The more I started to experiment with natural ingredients, the more I started seeing results in my own skin. When a mom at school would ask what I was using on my face, I knew I was on to something. When my friends would ask if they could try what I was making next, I started to see the potential to turn my passion into a business.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
The hustle is real! I’m a busy mom with kids in sports and activities. I would research ingredients while I waited for one kid at soccer practice, I would drop off orders in between school pick ups and getting off of work at my dental job. I would make dinner and my mind would be racing with ideas for skin care products. I went to bed thinking about my business that was just getting started and waking up excited to make products and try out new ideas. My sacrifices paid off with several small wins. My kids were proud of me! One day while my daughter was at a friend’s house, she took a photo of MY bath soak salts that were in her friend’s bathtub. I thought ” Wow! I’ve made it!”
There have been a lot of wins actually. Sure, the struggle is real. There just is not enough time in the day somedays. Most days I’m exhausted. But those nights when my head hits the pillow knowing I fulfilled my orders is so gratifying. Or when a customer leaves a review about how my face polish has helped with their son’s acne or that the gift basket of products a customer gave to their friend made them so happy.
As my business is growing, I’m still learning to balance being a mom and an entrepreneur, but now I have more confidence in both. This journey has taught me resilience and grit. The struggle gets easier, and as I grow as a person, I hope I’m becoming a better mom and businesswoman.
