Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Joey Farese. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Joey, appreciate you joining us today. The first dollar your business earns is always special and we’d love to hear how your brand made its first dollar of revenue.
The DJ business is like a lot of other businesses in that word of mouth is very important. It’s ironic because word of mouth is as important a decade later as it was in the beginning, I started by DJing friends parties and from there earned a lot of positive reviews online which led to more business and even more positive word of mouth. Eventually, all the buzz landed us a weekly residency at The Nixo downtown. When the owner of St Felix Hollywood walked in and saw us spinning there, we earned another weekly residency at his bar. It’s a cycle that never stops as long as you continue to provide excellent service.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’ve been a DJ for as long as I can remember. In my formative years, I could be found DJing all of my friends parties, and I loved it. I found i had a knack for reading a room and deciphering exactly what attendees would want to hear. When I got a little bit older, I started attending more formal parties and weddings.
I quickly realized that all the “professional DJs” were a lot older than me – most were in their 50s. It was apparent to me that there was a niche that wasn’t being filled. Older DJs work for an older crowd but the average age of a couple getting married is 30, and that doesn’t even begin to touch even younger crowds like sweet 16s and high school functions.
So I set out to start a professional DJ company. I took all my talent and industry knowledge and skills and set out into the unknown. I’ve had the company for a little over a decade now, and while i’m getting older myself, I’m still in my early 30s and exclusively employee DJs between 25-35. It took time to find the perfect harmony of professionalism and down to earth attitude needed to understand clients wishes.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
It has not been the smoothest path to success. The first 6 months I spent trying to build the company were really difficult. I was pouring all the money I had into advertising and was getting very little turn around. In my industry people want to see credible reviews from real people; and when you’re first starting out, it’s hard to book stuff without any past recommendations. It’s a viscous cycle because you need good reviews in order to book gigs and get more good reviews. I would definitely say the first 6 months of the company’s life were its most trying. That being said, difficulties continued to arise throughout the company’s growth. If you’ve never been on the question asking side of an interview than you probably don’t know this but interviewing someone can be way more difficult than being interviewed. Even today, we still face roadblocks that make running a business difficult, but I try to embrace every challenge that comes my way and remember that nothing worth doing was ever easy.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
The number one thing that has led us to garner such a positive reputation is our dedication to making the client happy. It’s important to understand that every event is unique. Whether it’s a wedding or a birthday party, behind every event is a person who is organizing something that is uniquely important to them, and as such, the music must be catered accordingly. It’s important to understand the client, their needs, and their musical tastes. Once you understand that, it’s easy to make their event a hit!
