We recently connected with Joey Commons and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Joey , thanks for joining us today. Crazy stuff happening is almost as certain as death and taxes – it’s technically “unexpected” but something unexpected happening is to be expected and so can you share a crazy story with our readers
This is a story about how you always establish relationships with everyone you meet. You never know what can happen down the road.
I had this project I was finishing up and was in desperate need for a Web Developer since mine that was on the project couldn’t finish the changes at the timeline that my client needed, aka ASAP. I reached out to all the connections I had if they knew anyone that could help so I could cross the finish line with this website. I wasn’t even worried about the rate at this point. An old co worker put me in contact with a connection who was ready to hop in and had a few Web Developers on staff that could work on the project that night.
Well it ended up that the client had to stop the project and never got the chance to work with this individual and their company.
We kept in contact and met anyway to present our company’s capabilities to see if there might be any projects in the future we could partner on. Well fast forward 11 months, she reached out with a huge project that they needed a production company to partner with. That was our biggest project to date and all because I stayed connected and pursued the relationship. Now she is a dear friend and we have a few projects with her company a year.
Joey , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Hello there! We’re SPRYY, a creative digital agency passionate about crafting unforgettable brand experiences through production, design, and development.
Our journey into the world of creative digital agency work stemmed from a shared passion for simplifying the complex. Co-founders Joey and Ben envisioned a different approach – one that prioritized clarity, authenticity, and a genuine connection with both brands and their audiences. With over two decades of combined experience, we’ve witnessed firsthand the pitfalls of large, bloated agencies and set out to create something refreshingly different.
At SPRYY, we’re not about flashy sales pitches or convoluted processes. Instead, we believe in directness and clarity, always striving to educate and delight our clients and their audiences. Our objective? To share what truly excites us about a brand in ways we know will resonate with viewers. From creative brainstorming to production, post-production, and beyond, we’re immersed in every aspect of the process, ensuring a strong and cohesive brand voice every step of the way.
What sets SPRYY apart is our unwavering commitment to quality, creativity, and collaboration. We’ve assembled a team of talented filmmakers, photographers, designers, and engineers, each with deep expertise and a shared passion for crafting the best creative experiences possible. Unlike traditional agencies, we’re adaptable, agile, and invested in our clients’ success, regardless of budget constraints. We believe in making creativity fun and accessible for everyone involved, championing a collaborative, easy-going environment where egos take a back seat to innovation.
When you partner with SPRYY, you’re not just getting top-quality creative work – you’re getting a dedicated team armed with top-quality creative tools, ready to deliver captivating content across any platform. We engage viewers by making them smile, whether through lighthearted humor or a meaningful moment, because we understand that emotion is the key to capturing hearts and minds.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
Amidst the chaos of the 2020 pandemic peak, my husband faced the harsh reality of being laid off from a production company, a consequence of the sweeping closures affecting corporations globally. Meanwhile, I found myself navigating the precarious landscape of the corporate events industry, fully aware that my own company teetered on the edge of substantial layoffs.
In the face of uncertainty, our collective experience and the network of relationships we had painstakingly cultivated over the years became our guiding light. It was during this tumultuous period that my husband and I came to a shared realization: sometimes, embracing risk is essential for progress.
Fueled by determination and a mutual belief in our capabilities, we made a bold decision—to venture into the unknown and create something of our own. Thus, SPRYY was born—an embodiment of our resilience, our shared vision, and our willingness to seize opportunities even in the darkest of times.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
In many well-established companies, most employees aren’t directly involved in acquiring clients or nurturing initial relationships for services provided. This situation becomes even more complex in the context of a small business, where there’s often a desperate need for cash flow. As a result, there’s a tendency to adopt a “say yes to everything” approach, which often leads to expanding beyond the original scope just to keep a customer satisfied and coming back.
For us, this habit became a serious issue, gradually snowballing until we realized we needed to make some changes. We took a step back and revamped our client onboarding process, focusing on creating well-documented Statements of Work (SOWs). We came to understand that our time is the backbone of our business, and it shouldn’t be dictated by the fear of saying “no.”
By reevaluating our approach and putting value on our time, we were able to shift our focus from simply pleasing clients to building a sustainable and profitable business model.
