Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Joel Nicholson. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Joel , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
The Story behind my mission is quite weird. My intent was never to start a business. My only intent was to wrap my car from time to time to in hopes of achieving my goal of keeping a car for more than 2 years lol. Upon doing this wrap I attracted customers that I never expected and that’s when I thought I could make a career out of this. I always had a thing for cars, and I loved working on them, so I never thought of any of the “work” that I was doing as actual work. Everything just flowed I never kept track of time like any of my other jobs and I never felt bored or too tired to be doing what I love. All in all, being a business owner runs in the family and you could say that I get my love for cars or working on cars from my dad. So, my mission is to be either as successful as him or even more successful than him.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
My name is Joel Nicholson born in Jamaica and lived there for 8 years. Ever since a child I was always into autos… whether it was a toy car, a pocket bike, or even an 18-wheeler. I got into my industry with a little help from my dad… inspiration wise. He would always do his own work on his cars, so I was almost always right there watching him take apart everything and put it back together flawlessly. Now that I’m kind of doing the same in a way I can give my thanks to him. For now, I only offer wrapping but, in the future, I want to be able to offer a full auto restyling shop. For instance, I would like to start offering window tints, detailing, and some minor mechanical work. When dealing with cars you can almost guarantee that everything is not going to go as planned. Not because you are doing your job incorrectly but, because every vehicle is different. Some potential problems I solve for my customers sanding down bad paint or clear coat and fixing errors on wraps whether from myself or others. I would say my will to make a customer happy is what sets me apart from others. I feel I am most proud of learning everything I do now because I never really had anyone to show me hands on… I just do an enormous amount of research before wrapping or taking apart pieces of a vehicle and I’m able to figure it out on my own. I would like for my followers or clients to know that I take pride in all my work, and I hate to let others down, so I try my best to make sure each customer is happy and satisfied before returning their vehicle. Even if they are unsatisfied afterwards I will always accept to fix any mistakes.
How did you build your audience on social media?
I built my audience on social media by basically selling myself. I would always post on my stories about me wrapping cars, fixing cars, etc…. After all this the following basically just started to grow on it’s own. People would view or like pictures and videos from many weeks ago which meant that my videos or pictures were still circulating on instagram. I do have to give a lot of credit to my friends and family as well because after every job I have done they have always been there to share, like or recommend other to get work done, and for that I am very grateful. If you’re just starting to build your social media presence, take your time and try to put out content that people like to see. Eventually the followers and likes will come there is no rush at all.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
I think what helped me build my reputation the most was just my understanding for those who just want a change in their vehicle without having to pay an arm and a leg! I’ve had quite a few younger customers like myself, so I understand their view or perspective. Of course, I must charge an amount where I can make a profit but sometimes, I can make an exception just to make someone happy. Because if I focus on the money and not the happiness of my customers then my business will never grow or be successful.
