Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Joel Myers. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Joel, thanks for joining us today. So, what do you think about family businesses? Would you want your children or other family members to one day join your business?
If we think where businesses themselves derive from we can drill down and understand that the original business IS family. A cohesive unit tied together through the common tie of DNA was the original business reason to work together and build together. The best businesses have extracted the best aspects of family organization and defensibility to become dominant in their industries. What works well is communication and a steady rhythm of communication. I would even say, “over-communication” is really the goal so that there is synchronicity in all operations. I believe business built by families become assets to raise children up into and to pass to them when they are ready to take the helm. I’ve heard of family offices, which are businesses that are held inside of a family trust, that provide great growth for families through several generations over different industries. This type of organization benefits the family greatly and should be the North star for families with high aspirations.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
We are a generation that teaches ourselves and also names ourselves. Bestowed the name Joel Myers from my parents, I’ve taken the power of naming myself Jovial Joel due to my eternal optimism and the joy I use as fuel to consistently prove this optimism through whatever life presents me. This zeitgeist has always led me to be and think differently than my surroundings, presenting the opportunity to attain much of whatever I desire. Growing up, my Mom & Dad witnessed my skillsets for music and also my proficiency in mathematics. They guided me towards using my musicianship through singing and playing drums in church and my ability to handle complex arithmetic through computers and technology. I grew up as the singing, neighborhood tech guy. I’d rock the church out with a lively song and performance and later that evening be making a house call to see what issue a neighbor’s Windows 95 desktop was having. I’d be fixing or updating neighbors’ computers, updating their printer drivers, etc. putting my mind to whatever issue they could let my mom know and she would deploy me down the street to assess and resolve. I was the original geek squad! This led me to choose Computer Science as my main studies through high school and college, landing me in the realm of mobile app development. I consulted for over a decade as a native iOS contractor for all types of organizations like UPS, Honeywell, Pennsylvania Dept. of Transportation and several startups. The work I accomplished at the startup level where I wore several hats simultaneously really let me know that I could take my work in software development further. I decided to found my software development firm, MyerSoft Solutions ,where I guide non-technical startup founders to build their MVP versions that help their brand enter the app space. We have built custom solutions and have provided fractional technical leadership for these organizations that have resulted in successful exits and acquisitions the like. In this time serving through software development around the country, I went on a quest for knowledge that landed me in the understanding that all things are vibrating and resonating a frequency. These different frequencies generate different tones or notes. This esoteric knowledge that I acquired after college finally began fusing with the scholastic knowledge of physics that I studied during my Computer Science/Mathematics course load at Georgia State University. In synchronistic fashion, at the top of 2020 I received a small singing bowl with a wooden mallet from a family friend. I had read about these but now one was brought to me seemingly out of nowhere. Good thing there is no such thing as coincidence! I played this one bowl so much that my wife’s cousin gifted me another type of singing bowl as she said she noticed how intentional I was when I played the first one. I then understood my positioning and acquired a full 7 bowl set of crystal tibetan singing bowls that align and resonate with the 7 energy centers within the human body. From here, I transitioned my musicianship into these spiritual music generators and started my vibrational sound therapy organization, Healing Heart Sounds. This business focuses on providing vibrational sound journeys to strengthen mental health and wellness by tuning up listeners energetic frequencies to match the harmonics of the instruments. We partner with corporations, non-profits, local wellness practitioners to amplify mental health and wellness in our post-Pandemic world. Founding this business along with operating my software business centered my path of what I’ve deemed is “High Frequency Living.” This is characterized by the outlook of how both technology and sound therapy are modalities that optimize and make more efficient and expedient the actions environment in which it exists. All in all that is what I’ve always been about and that is the manner in which I serve through sound and technology.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
Death is the ultimate knowledge of life. It is something that is so large of a thought and experience that once fully held, you can no longer reside in the living. As I’ve experienced close deaths of family members since my undergrad days with my Dad transitioning in 2006, I learned to release what I thought was control and began to live knowing there was a stronger force that had its own timing of shifting energies. I was able to take this blow from life as my Daddy always prepared me during our yard work days saying things like, “pay attention and learn this because I’m not gonna be here always.” I became the man of the family and marched on. The supreme knowledge of death came to me again 6 years after this when my sister transitioned in a head on collision with a drunk driver. My mom was in this accident as well and she survived. I was challenged to the n-th degree once again by this thing called life. Feeling like an eternal optimist, I was really being tested to maintain this way of being. Using gratitude as my fuel, knowing that I could have lost both, but at least Mama survived I lived boldly in the thought of some is better than none. We created philanthropy in my sister’s honor named the Mariah Ida Myers Day Scholarship and have donated over $10K in scholarships since 2013. With my new normal I pressed on and began shifting into entrepreneurship through my growth in software and then into vibrational sound therapy. Life for me was pushing on as a married man and supporter of my wife’s accomplishments in real estate and public speaking, as well as caring for my mother and younger brother. Life decided to challenge me with an effect of this ultimate knowledge of life called death again in 2022. We did a wellness check on my brother, Jamanis, and ended up finding him transitioned in his apartment. This passing left remaining from our 5 person nuclear family only myself, and my Mama. This occurred when I had JUST the week before signed on to be the Program Manager/Architect for a client building an equity crowdfunding mobile app platform. Without any communication of this personal matter, I celebrated my brother’s life through ceremony and rites and continued onwards leading this organization’s MVP to completion and approval by FINRA to help early stage companies raise through our solution. Life may be hard at times, but its fair. Every life that can be lived, will be lived — and this is what gives infinity its meaning. This life of mine is just one of the infinite.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
Once again, I’m Jovial Joel and I am wealthy in relationships first. I’ve held many relationships for over 20 – 25 years that I can still count on. New relationships exist in this same connectivity that I exude and I’m glad I am this person to others and I’m thankful for who these people are to me. Warm market leads, or referrals from people who actually know me and have known me for years viewing my outcomes in software, have attracted the most of my clientele. I’ll get introduced to people needing my expertise as they have become prepared to build their app products and I’ll have a few conversations, share them my plan and be leading their charge. It is similar with vibrational sound therapy; people connect me with other people whom are intentional on positively shifting the environment that they are hosting and we create divine moments in sound. I will say close seconds in effective prospecting has been LinkedIn as well as Meetups. There’s nothing like meeting like-minded individuals and growing business relationships from there!
