Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Joel Moody. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Joel thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
I came up with the idea of Revolution Bike Shop with my late Father who had a bucket list dream to own a bike shop. This was a total flyer. Complete leap of faith moment. We knew with our customer service background we could provide something for the community that was all-inclusive. But we also wanted to reach further and make it a truly family owned worldwide bike store. With that in mind we started brainstorming how we could do this and came up with a series of videos and ideas to reach the audience we wanted. Crazy enough none of those hit the web as when we opened the doors things snowballed quickly. The simple treat others as you wanted to be treated method had us growing quickly, so we took it one day at a time, and still do! I still feel after 12 years we offer something different and now have a large base of local and international customers and friends that make owning a business fun!

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
With the market crashing in 2008 I knew I had to do something different. I got into SEO of websites and building websites and thought that was going to be my path. My Dad who was a triathlete, runner, cyclist, had always wanted to have a bike shop, so I decided to help him create an online store. We quickly realized to sell products from all vendors we need a brick and mortar. Within a week we found a small 600 sq ft place and opened Revolution! We just wanted everyone to feel welcome and treat everyone the same. Living in the area my whole life I wanted to really ground myself into the community and offer a level of service most people weren’t used to. Im most proud of staying true to myself and growing something that is flourishing from nothing. If you put your mind and heart into whatever it is you want to do, you will succeed!
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
You can make a lot of mistakes in running a business. But you have to learn from them! Controlling inventory can be a huge challenge. None of us have a crystal ball and can predict what the market will do. There was a time where things were going very good and I tried to grow to fast. Thought I could handle taking on almost double the inventory based on the growth rate we had going. Big mistake. I should have just stayed in the pocket of where we were. It was a scary time holding way too much inventory and having bills due that seemed impossible to pay. We barely got thru it and I have never made that mistake again. Be happy with where you are at. Don’t try and grow too fast. It will come back to bite you!

Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
Really the best source of new clients is the clients you already have. Let your customers be the sounding board and the ones bringing you new clients. I’ve never been a big fan of spending big money into marketing to get your name out there. If you are doing things right and let it grow naturally and are treating people right, you will have all the business you can handle. If you do it right, your customers will tell their friends, those friends tell their friends, etc. Don’t force it! The growth will happen if you are treating your clients right. If you don’t see a growth in your business change things up! It sounds easy because it is!
