We were lucky to catch up with Joel Michel recently and have shared our conversation below.
Joel, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What do you think matters most in terms of achieving success?
First and foremost, one must have the right temperament that empowers you to succeed in anything you do. The right temperament that gives you the capacity to succeed. Success requires a certain level of determination, discipline and consistency.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Joel Michel, I was born and raised in Miami, Fl. I am the son of two Haitian parents, which makes me bi-culture. My parents saw fit to make sure that both cultures were represented even as they themselves struggled to assimilate to the American way of life.
Growing up in South Florida, our fashion statement is a collective of sporty, beachy, informal or as I like to say, casual cosmopolitan. I wanted to include this fashion style into a look that spoke to my own personal style. Fashion, to me is how one identifies in a world with so much to say. I wanted to create a brand that allowed our customers to not only look good, but feel good while telling the world, here I am.
Our clothing is of high quality and luxury fabrics. We only want the best for our customers. What others may or may not know is that our brand and our clothing honors God. Literally! We include Him in the making of our clothing. Every piece of clothing comes with a scripture written on the tag, so that the world knows that God is the priority.
What sets us apart from other high end brand is that while are clothing are luxury, we are affordable. Royal Look Clothing believes that one should look good without having to break the bank. Our brand takes pride in our clothing pieces, which is why attention to details is of the upmost importance.
What we are most proud of is having the opportunity to be creative and doing what we love, fashion! We want our customers to feel a sense of pride and confidence with each piece they adorned. We know that the fashion industry is saturated with many designs and designers, but as a small business, we are able to offer our customers adaptability. Royal Look Clothing is all about our customers. We currently have the privilege of knowing each and every one of our customers, which is why we considered each of them as members of our Royal Family.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
One of the biggest changes that Royal Look Clothing faced was the ending of partnership with one of its original cofounders. The ending of the partnership lead to legal, financial and personal changes that ultimately affected the brand. It’s wise to point out that failures can only be measured by the lessons it teaches you especially when you are restarting your business. When you’re resilient, you know that failure is only a temporary setback and it can also be learned from and built upon. Like I previously stated, Royal Look Clothing honors God, so it was only a matter of time, patience, and a lot of prayers, that the company was able to get back on its feet. We rebranded, re organized and planned a new course of action.

Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
One of the lessons that I had to unlearn was that success does not come overnight. When I first started this brand, I became frustrated when things weren’t happening in the time frame that I’d expected. I became frustrated that we weren’t selling as much as I’d expected and that the brand, our clothing, wasn’t meeting the goals that I thought it would. In a way, I was looking for instant, overnight success. That’s absolutely unreasonable. I had to learn that success doesn’t happen overnight, not for my company, your company, or anyone else’s. And that’s okay! My father taught me that slow and steady work leads to success that is sustainable in a way that nothing “overnight” could ever match.
