We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Joee Spacey a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Joee, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?

The solo exhibitions help me display what I’m feeling and what I’ve experienced over a duration of time. To me, right now because I’m wrapping up my FIRST solo exhibition, that’s the most meaningful project I’ve worked on. To present a fleshed out idea and present it to an audience.

Joee, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?

My name is Kj Bennett aka Joee Spacey and I’m a self taught visual artist and curator from Suitland, Maryland. I got into the art world by way of vending and connecting with the artists here in the DMV. What sets me apart are the things I create and the feelings I communicate by way of my work. My brand is based on nostalgia but also authenticity. There’s hella vulnerability in my work.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?

My goal is to basically get my ideas, thoughts and feelings out/off. I’m in my head a lot of of the time, which causes me to overthink. I journal, I create in various ways. I collab with other creatives to basically bring ideas and things to life and make them tangible items. I always say “I go through something and then I create by way of that experience”.

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.

Dude, when I got the greenlight for my first solo exhibition, I began to go through soooo much. It felt like life was kicking my butt and tryna break me. I began to pray harder and more often. Whenever you grow and make progress, you get to tougher battles and cross thresholds that test you more and more. Getting my first solo exhibition was a big step and it felt like it came with a lot in my real life. They’re probably not ACTUALLY connected but it felt that way. Still feels that way.
