We recently connected with Joe Viger and have shared our conversation below.
Joe, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What do you think matters most in terms of achieving success?
When I worked in corporate business, I heard Jim Collins speak. He’s a business researcher and the author of a popular business book called “Good to Great”. He told a story of interviewing the founder of Walgreens and how he could show him with data when his business took off. Collins asked him what happened that year? You can see in the numbers that everything changed and you had steady growth after that. Mr. Walgreen said “I don’t know. I just had been doing what I thought was right and I kept doing it”. Collins talked about how that sort of commitment to working your business in a way you believe in and with consistency, leads to growth over time. I think of that most days and it helps me stay on course and maintain the authenticity of my business.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m a photographer with a strong concentration in mountain sports like running, cycling and skiing as well as real estate. I also do marketing work and portraiture. I’m a former VP of Sales and Marketing for a software company and while I very much love the creative side of photography, I also love working with clients to address their marketing needs and deliver images that tell their brand story and create impact. This may be visually, but it may also be collaborating on a social media strategy. I know many of my clients are trying to sell with my photos. And I understand business and sales, so I want to be a partner to them in this way whenever I can. I think this may be a bit different from many of my peers who have never worked in business and their train of thought ends at the front of the lens.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
After operating as a side hustle for a number of years, the year COVID hit was my second year of full time business. I had a strong calendar of events that was going be the foundation of my year. As we know, events slowly but surely all were cancelled. I ended up doing two events that year. But it was also the year I was able to pivot in to photographing real estate. That saved me and this area of my business continues to grow.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
Quality work, relationships, a business mindset, reliability and consistency.
