Joe , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Let’s start on the operational side – do you spend more of your time/focus/energy on growing revenue or cutting costs?
Both matter, especially when you are a public company and investors determine the value of your company. Wall Street is impressed with companies with great ideas that are also fiscally responsible. It’s important to know that cutting costs to increase your revenues doesn’t mean losing employee. It should be the opposite, where your growing staff buys into fiscal responsibility and discipline. Provide your employees stock options so they have real incentive and an ownership stake in the company. You’ll see how important revenues versus spending will be to them.
Plus, COVID taught the business world a lesson and showcased who was ready and who was not. Those companies with the best practices in place did not have to play the game of catch-up. This experience will help businesses get through any future struggles.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’ve had the pleasure of spending 30 years in the healthcare industry. My successful history has included introducing and commercializing new technologies and services in many areas, including electronic brachytherapy, PET and PET/CT, SPECT, MRI, lithotripsy, and digital radiography. I founded Sensus Healthcare in 2010 as a medical device company specializing in highly effective, non-invasive, minimally invasive, and cost-effective treatments for both oncological and non-oncological conditions.
There used to be one way to treat skin cancer… and it was surgery. This surgery means cutting, blood, pain, and scarring. Obviously not exciting options for the patient, but necessary. We are revolutionizing the dermatology industry with an alternative to surgery. Our technology is used by dermatologists all over the country, eliminates surgery, is cleared by the FDA, and is a game-changer. Change in the medical world does not happen overnight and it has taken Sensus over a decade to break through into this market. While there’s more to accomplish, I believe that this superficial radiation therapy (SRT) technology will become the gold standard for treating most skin cancers. It’s less costly and beneficial for both the doctors and the patients.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
We built our impressive reputation first with complete honesty with our patients, customers, investors, and doctors. We also put our incredible and reliable technology into the hands of great dermatologists. Also, it has been important to educate patients on the stunning outcomes and results from our treatments of skin cancer and this patient awareness of the SRT technology.
Can you share one of your favorite marketing or sales stories?
Back in the 1980s it was the doctors and not the hospitals that had the biggest influence on technology coming into the hospital. I was working for a Johnson & Johnson company selling a revolutionary MRI technology. At one hospital I was pitted against a juggernaut competitor to get our product selected by one doctor. We crunched the numbers and put together an incredible pitch by his deadline. Then I took the doctor to lunch, and he said our competitor asked for a week delay. I saw my opportunity and asked him, “Why do you think they are asking for a delay?” He didn’t know. And I told him that this meant that this salesperson needs more time with his bosses to convince them that you are worth the discount. We know that you are worth the discount. He said I was right and signed the contract with us this day. That was a great lunch!
