We were lucky to catch up with Joe Moxley recently and have shared our conversation below.
Joe, appreciate you joining us today. To kick things off, we’d love to hear about things you or your brand do that diverge from the industry standard.
Moxley Media – Make Some NOISE… Anchor Valley Wine – Challenge Conformity
Printed On Site – Bringing The Power Of Print to Your Next Event
I understand these are my taglines for my businesses but they also tie into each of our missions for the companies respectively. Moxley Media was started in 2013 out of the need for an affordable solution for marketing and branding/promotional in our local area. The people of Medford were ready for something new and wanted to step up their apparel game. One client led to thousands over the years. Making some noise for us means a lot more for our clients than it does for us. Our job is to make sure they standout and look good doing so. And no need to be quiet about it! Your brand says so much about you, your employees, the work you do within your community and so much more. If your brand/logo isn’t making some noise, Moxley Media will help.
Admittedly, starting a wine company with almost zero wine knowledge at the time might not have been the best business move. But as my love for wine progressed, so did my vision. I knew I wanted to create something different from the industry standard and have award-winning wines in the process. I wanted to challenge conformity. I wanted to create a lifestyle brand that other people would feel comfortable with and support. At the same time, I have a lot of respect for other wineries and the wine industry. This is especially true for the wineries in Southern Oregon where the wine scene is booming. Our tasting room is a little louder, user-friendly, judgement-free, come as you are. Drink the the wine you like. It really can be that simple. Don’t have to fit in, don’t have to color within the lines. Just be yourself, challenge conformity and make your own lane.
Being on the road and traveling the nation to make a living isn’t for everyone. With Printed On Site we have been hitting the road since 2013. It is owner-operated, which is why I believe we have done so well. With all of my businesses it’s still very DIY. Wether we have an event printing shirt in Oregon or in New Jersey, an owner will be there making sure the job gets done correctly. We bring the power of print to your next event.
Joe, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I came from very humble beginnings. Small town, trailer to trailer. I don’t take any of my success for granted and will continue to push myself, business partners and employees to grow. For High School I moved from Berry Creek, California to Rogue River, Oregon to live with my Dad and Step Mom. I was blessed to attend Cascade Christian High School. Shortly after graduation, I became a licensed commodity broker in Grants Pass, Oregon. Working as a broker in the early mornings and a janitor at nights, I was able to buy my first house at 19 years of age. After 5 years I sold my house and bought a coffee shop. A year later started my 2nd coffee shop. I was able to sell both of the coffee shops and start a clothing store, GoLucky Clothing in Medford, Oregon. It was at that store that I found my love of fashion and apparel printing. I created my own clothing brand that would sell in-store and online internationally. A lot of the sales were from my business partner being in a well-known band (Mike Herrera of MxPx) with fans all over the world. After a couple of years I sold the clothing store but kept my clothing line. With my first kid on the way, I got a “real” job at Costco in the marketing department. For 5 years I worked during the day and printed shirts at night. In 2013 I took the leap to start my own screen printing shop (Moxley Media) and also partner up with life long friends to join Printed On Site. We have come a long way since those days of printing in my garage. After a decade, Mike and I decided to roll Legionnaire Apparel into the wine business; this was the birth of Anchor Valley. The day after we announced Anchor Valley Wine, we took double gold at the Oregon Wine Experience. Harry and David even asked to carry our entire wine lineup! As the new kids on the block and without much industry knowledge, we planned to just be an online retail store in the wine world. However, all of our buyers kept asking, “where is your tasting room located?” This inspired us to open Anchor Valley Wine Bar and Tasting Room for locals in Jacksonville, Oregon to enjoy our wines. I knew if I wanted to do this business justice I would need the help of Bill and Cari Powell. With all of my businesses, my success lies in having partners that shine in the areas that I struggle. Moxley Media would not be what it is without Jesus and Aleana Lopez, Printed On Site without Geary and Stacy Hanley, and Anchor Valley without Bill and Cari Powell.
How’d you meet your business partner?
I was the sole owner of Moxley Media until my niece, Aleana, moved to Oregon and started to working for me. I quickly realized I had an employee that I could not only trust but one that also made it her priority make the business better and looked out for my best interest. It was really easy for me to bring her on as a partner.
With Anchor Valley, Mike Herrera was already business partner of mine from the clothing like and we rolled that partnership into the wine business. We then added Bill and Cari. That was a game changer for me. These two get the job done! They lead by example not only for our employees but for myself as well. I continue to look up to them in business and in life.
Geary and Stacy have always been friends first. They asked me to join Printed On Site 10 years ago and to this day we still lead with our friendship first. This business has been very successful because who we are as owners and people.
If you want to be successful, surround yourself with successful people.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
We opened our tasting room right when covid hit. Not a great time to open most businesses, especially one that was based off the public attending. We knew we had to pivot our business model and make changes to survive. We offered same-day free local delivery with any bottle purchases. We also offered free shipping on our website. This helped us grow our wine club which ended up being our backbone to Anchor Valley and helped us stay open during a time we lost a lot of good businesses.
