We were lucky to catch up with Joe Jarvis recently and have shared our conversation below.
Joe, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
A meaningful project I’ve been working on behind the scenes with my team is the Love N Laughs Tour 2024. We’ll be sharing our stories and songs live in local communities across the tri-state area. Our goal is to openly talk about mental health: trauma, abuse, addiction, depression, anxiety, etc – to connect people with mental health ministries and resources for a lasting impact in their lives. We’ll be bringing joy, fellowship, and togetherness to churches and their communities throughout Michigan and the Tri-state area. I’ll be joined by award-winning Christian artist Connor Roy, husband and wife duo The Growing Roots, and Janice Rigel, A life coach, speaker, podcast host, and Christian comedian. Love and Laughs will be a free event open to the community, Tour dates are coming soon! You can go to my website at joejarvismusic.com/lovenlaughs for more info. We’re excited to see some lives be impacted and changed! Another meaningful project that’s in the works is my debut EP, “Love Is a Verb”. I’ve released a couple of tracks off of it so far such as “Again” and “Love Is a Verb” with my next single “Walk a Mile” coming out November 22nd! Every song on the EP has a unique purpose: to showcase a different form of love in action.
I believe that love is more than just some pretty words, it’s something we have to choose every day in every area of our lives!
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m an award-winning Christian Artist from the Metro Detroit area. People also call me “Smiley” because that’s exactly what I am.
It’s been a whirlwind of a year! I hit the ground running after winning the Michigan State Fair Superstar Competition back in 2022. Ever since, I’ve had a full schedule of touring, as well as being featured live on the TV/news, radio/podcasts, and publications such as this one. I’ve even had the chance to open for some of the greatest CCM artists such as Cochren and Co, Micah Tyler, Ryan Stevenson, Apollo LTD, We Are Messengers, and Sanctus Real. I’m so incredibly thankful for all the opportunities I’ve received and excited for what’s to come!
Music connects with people in a very special way. In a world that’s seemingly always filled with controversies and chaos, I want my music to be a little bright spot in somebody’s day – to let them know that they’re not alone in their struggles. That even when life gets hard, there’s still hope for tomorrow.
My faith is definitely what drives me and my music forward.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
When I was 17 both of my parents were facing life-threatening health issues. We were traveling across the country looking for answers about my dad’s blood disorder for a couple of years straight. Just as we were starting to figure some things out, my mom was diagnosed with stage II breast cancer. For a time, I wasn’t sure if my parents were ever going to recover, leaving me to take care of my 8-year-old little brother. My parents both made it through and are still with us, thank God! But I have to say that was one of the harder times in my life, and it caused me to grow up a little bit faster. When people ask how I got through it, I always point back to the same thing: my faith in God. I’ve struggled with anxiety my whole life, even more so during this time. However, just knowing He had me in His hands gave me enough peace to make it through the day.
I think this was the time in my life that’s pushed me to reach out to others through my music. My experiences have shaped who I am, what I do, and how I write music.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
I honestly feel like I have the best job in the world! I get to do what I love, and what’s better than that?!
I’m a people person with a sense of wanderlust. So, getting to meet new people, see new places, share my music… it’s a dream come true! Being a Christian Artist definitely comes with a sense of purpose that I can hardly describe. At the end of the day, I want to help others find the hope, healing, and peace that I’ve found through my faith.
