We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Joe Howell a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Joe, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. So, let’s start with trends – what are some of the largest or more impactful trends you are seeing in the industry?
In both the film and music industries, there is a big trend towards more consumable content on digital platforms. It was already moving in that direction a few years ago, but now people are discovering even more ways to get entertainment. With social media platforms continuing to be popular, consumers have more choices now on how they get movies, television, videos, music, and games.

Joe, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I started in the entertainment business from music. I was a DJ and Music producer as well as a songwriter. I find there are many similarities between music and film since they both require good writers and composers. As a writer, I look for a good story in the script and then we find the best way to tell that story so it’s entertaining.
I am an independent producer right now, which means I’m not linked to a studio. I work with studios to facilitate content for their audience. Our company handles all aspects of film production from start to finish.
Our team tries to find out what the client wants. The client may be a company, TV Network, or film studio. We want to know what they are looking for and then create for that client. Some filmmakers create their own ideas and stories, which is fine, but it’s also important to work with partners in this industry.
I am extremely proud of the quality that we are producing. There are many content creators and some of them just don’t put out quality. Our goal is to create high-quality films and programming that will stand up over time. We have won some awards along the way and I hope we can continue raising the bar.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
One of the most rewarding aspects of the creative industry is having people enjoy the final product and see your work once it’s ready. When people comment and tell us how much they enjoyed watching or how much they love the work we’ve done, it’s extremely satisfying. It makes me want to continue creating.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
I would say my goal right now is to do great work that reaches the largest audience possible. If people can get a positive message from what I’m doing, that is a blessing. I don’t focus on the negative; I want our audience to feel uplifted and inspired by our work and remember it.
