We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Joe Cahill. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Joe below.
Hi Joe , thanks for joining us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
I’m currently working on my symphony, “Runner’s High.” The symphony is all about my experience running in New York City. I aim to release the symphony and collaborate with the running community. I hope my music can be a soundtrack that motivates people to run, walk, dance, or any sort of movement. I feel when we move we come up with our best ideas.
Let me know if you are a runner or part of a community of runners. I would love to talk about running and music.
Joe , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Joe Cahill, and I’m a composer, comedian, pianist, and director. I love telling stories through films, musicals, and comedy shows that explore themes of religion, technology, drugs, and love.
Currently, I’m working on a symphony titled “Runner’s High,” inspired by the vibrant experience of running in New York City. Set to be released this March, the symphony celebrates the running community and the joy of movement. Additionally, I’m producing an immersive experience that invites the audience to be part of a fairytale luxury wedding gone horribly wrong, where they get to decide how the chaos unfolds. Catch the proof of concept show on April 30th in Brooklyn!
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
A lesson I learned as a child was to be very polite and to not speak unless spoken to. There is nothing wrong with being polite, but I feel that sometimes it can make you passive.
What stopped me from reaching out to artists in the past was the feeling that I was bothering them. When I would go to networking events, I would hold my tongue. Now I realize that you should reach out and talk to people because how else does one build a community or get a job? Also, it’s a networking event—the purpose is to talk to people. It took me a while to realize that.
I am still polite, but I am much more direct when reaching out to people. Additionally, I really enjoy talking to others.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
I feel there is an epidemic of loneliness in our society, and I want to create shows and experiences that bring people together. For that reason, I tell stories.
So far in my life, I have told stories through composing, comedy, musicals, and film.
For my next project, I am writing a story for an immersive experience. This immersive experience centers around a wedding that goes horribly wrong, and the audience gets to not only decide the outcome but also be a part of the groom’s and bride’s families and act as family members.
My goal is for people to come to the show, role-play, and meet others along the way. I have a proof of concept show happening on April 30th in Brooklyn.
