We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Joe Acosta. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Joe below.
Hi Joe , thanks for joining us today. What do you think it takes to be successful?
To be successful, you should a have passion for the work that you are doing.
Educating yourself on what you’re capable of can be fun and exciting, so it’s important to keep your goals reasonable, realistic, and fun to have an emotionally positive experience.
Keep moving forward without losing perspective.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
We’re selling a certain kind of lifestyle. Of course, we do have our competitors…Walmart, Home Depot, Lowes just to name a few…but in the industry of grills and kitchenware, there is only a couple other big stores. It’s definitely a niche and we stand out by offering a vision of how someone can transform peoples home life by the way they hold gatherings at home. We want to transform the way folks you cook and live.
When I came in, Barbeques Galore had no digital marketing team and a very limited online marketing strategy. They had been working with several vendors but hadn’t automate anything. I layed the foundation for search engine optimization to drive SEO traffic to BBQGalore.com, I trained customer service representatives to bolster our online reputation by actively asking for customer reviews…we stated responding to comments on all of our videos, etc.
When shopping online or in person, customers like to see what other people are saying about the products before they made their decision to buy. Reviews sometimes are the only thing that folks have to base their decisions on when they are not yet a customer and have no friends/family who’ve used the product or service.
While the pandemic has curtailed the growth of many brands, our sales have been amazing. Since more people are staying at home now, it’s become more important to enhance their living spaces.
My advice for other marketers…get your branding in order. It’s definitely critical to get your branding situated as soon as possible. Some people think it’s fluff, but it motivates those around you. Having a well-crafted vision statement really shows your passion for the craft and can get you buy in from your audience because they know you’re invested.
Allocate where you can. Some people try to do everything, and they can end up doing just the bare minimum. When you have tunnel vision, you cannot see all of the opportunities. Identify where you can outsource, and allocate time to research who can do the work you cannot do.
Lastly, have a backlog of ideas. Every idea is a valuable idea to me. Have a backlog of ideas so that you never forget them. We might not implement a suggestion now, but maybe we will do it in the future. It’s always good to be prepared.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
One of the things that has helped our reputation in the market is the fact that are factually the largest specialty retailer of grills and outdoor living products.
We have retail stores concentrated throughout California, Nevada, Arizona and Texas.
With millions of grill sales under our belt we pride ourselves on the expert knowledge of our online customer service reps. and our in-store sales associates. They will always take the time to help you shop for the right grill for your home, business, or recreational activity.
Whether it’s a small portable grill or a complete custom island we have options for every space and budget.
How do you keep your team’s morale high?
When our employees feel heard, they are much more committed to their quality of work…they trust their employer, …and they feel meaningful to the company.
So we are always collecting and acting upon candid employee feedback and suggestions that will improve morale, performance, and retention.
We are of the mindset that providing good training and employee development opportunities will enable our team to advance their skills, produce high quality work, and become more valuable assets to our company,
