We recently connected with Jodie Fisher and have shared our conversation below.
Jodie, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
My most recent project is a documentary film called “Cannes Without A Plan”. It takes place mainly at the Cannes Film Festival and is about 3 women, including myself. I got invited to go to the Festival with a film I was in called “Easy Rider, The Ride Back” starring Jeff Fahey and Sheree Wilson. I invited two girlfriends to go along with me – it was all very last minute and kinda crazy. One friend brought along her camera and we all took turns filming each other during the trip. We then got the footage to renowned film editor, Jeff Kanew, and he crafted the footage into something really fun to watch! Thus, “Cannes Without A Plan”.
I love it because it is female directed, female driven and very relevant. There is a little bit of a “me too” story that is alluded to, there is romance, there is a motorcycle ride down the Croisette…and more! Take the trip!!
Jodie, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
When I was in my early twenties, I tagged along on an audition with a friend of mine in New York. It was for an Aaron Spelling pilot and I ended up reading for one of the parts and then being asked to screen-test, all of which I knew nothing about!! But I was hooked!
I moved to Los Angeles and began auditioning. I got really lucky and booked leads in several films right away. This began a career in B movie films as a lead actress in the ’90’s. I was frustrated with this phase of my career. The truth is, I never felt creative but always wanted to be. Acting is such a challenge and a delight at the same time. It’s an art form that is never finished for me. I am always wanting more, always trying to figure things out. I never like to watch anything that I have done, but I enjoy doing it.
Over the years, I’ve worked on several TV shows. One of the wildest experiences was a show I did for NBC called “The Age of Love”. It was a dating reality show about a young guy, 29 year old Mark Phiippoussis, the tennis star, dating older women. This show had the most intense audition process of anything I have ever done! Unscripted TV feels a lot like doing something “live” as you never know what is going to happen and also how you will be “edited”.
My favorite set that I have worked on was “NCIS: Los Angeles”. LL Cool J and Chris O’Donnell were so darn much fun to work with and the entire cast and crew were just very easy going and a total delight!!
Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
I wish that I had treated acting as more of a daily career and less of a “cross my fingers and hope” pursuit.
I had a real change of heart about 15 years ago when I watched the movie “The Secret”, and was shocked to discover that I had some negative thought patterns. I started “talking” to myself differently. I started thinking differently, thinking not only positively about things but also feeling incredibly grateful for my entire life. All of it. Every bit. It was a turning point for me in my relationships, my career, and most importantly my happiness!!
