We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jodi Silbermann. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jodi below.
Hi Jodi, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear about the best boss, mentor, or leader you’ve ever worked with.
The Best Boss I Ever Had: A Story of Mentorship, Growth, and Resilience
I’ve been working in the legal field for over 27 years, beginning my career as a Paralegal in 1992. Over the years, I’ve continuously sought to learn and grow, earning my Paralegal certification and later deciding to pursue a Bachelor’s in Business Administration at American Public University. But the turning point in my professional journey came in December 2017, when my boss, mentor, and friend, John G. McGill, Jr., passed away unexpectedly from a heart attack.
John was not just an employer—he was a guiding force in my career. I had been working alongside him in his family law practice for many years, and as his only support staff, I was responsible for every aspect of the office’s operations. John trusted me with everything from negotiating settlements with opposing counsel to preparing for trials and hearings. He even had me write a successful appeal brief on grandparents’ rights with little to no guidance—something I look back on as a major milestone in my career.
When John unexpectedly passed, I was left with the daunting task of closing down a successful 40+ year practice. I was faced with the challenge of transferring a large volume of cases and receivables, all while knowing I wouldn’t be compensated for the work. I took it on as a responsibility, working tirelessly to ensure clients were informed and files were properly transferred to new attorneys.
During that time, John and I had been working together on a groundbreaking project—a “TurboTax for Divorce” website designed to help people navigate the divorce process on their own. After his passing, I was asked to continue as the Subject Matter Expert for this project. Over the next year, I worked on writing user stories, developing interfaces, and creating mock-ups for the software, all while completing my business degree and starting my own venture, Just Call Jodi Incorporated.
John’s influence on me was profound. He taught me not only about the legal profession but also about resilience, adaptability, and the importance of mentorship. His guidance during our years together gave me the confidence to pivot into entrepreneurship. I leveraged my legal expertise and John’s lessons to launch Just Call Jodi Incorporated, a business focused on providing affordable and personalized legal document preparation and divorce coaching services. We’re not just helping clients fill out forms; we’re guiding them through the emotional and practical complexities of divorce, helping them transition From We to Me, which is the name of my business and coaching program.
Through this journey, I learned how to combine the technical side of law with empathy and personal support—two values that John instilled in me. Today, I use the skills and insights I gained from working with John to provide clients with a sense of confidence, clarity, and empowerment during one of the most challenging times in their lives.
John wasn’t just the best boss I ever had—he was the best mentor, and his legacy continues to guide me as I build my business and help others thrive through the legal process.

Jodi, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m Jodi Silbermann, the founder of Just Call Jodi Incorporated and From We to Me, two ventures designed to help individuals navigate the complexities of divorce with both legal expertise and emotional support. With over 27 years in the legal field as a Paralegal and Legal Document Assistant, I’ve always been passionate about making legal services more accessible, affordable, and personal. My goal is to guide my clients not just through the legal process, but through the emotional and personal transformation that comes with it.
My career began in 1992 when I received my Paralegal certification and started working in family law. Over the years, I became increasingly focused on helping individuals going through divorce—especially those facing domestic violence or other personal challenges. I went on to pursue a Bachelor’s in Business Administration in 2017, which helped me sharpen my entrepreneurial skills and set the stage for founding Just Call Jodi Incorporated.
Just Call Jodi Incorporated and From We to Me are deeply intertwined—both are built on my belief that no one should face a divorce alone. At Just Call Jodi Incorporated, we provide Legal Document Preparation services for clients who need help navigating the legal paperwork of divorce, custody, and family law issues. But we don’t stop there. Through From We to Me, we offer Divorce Coaching services, which focus on the emotional, mental, and strategic aspects of the divorce process. It’s not just about filing paperwork; it’s about helping individuals emerge stronger and more confident in their new life post-divorce.
At Just Call Jodi Incorporated, I offer:
Personalized Legal Document Preparation – We help clients fill out, file, and understand their legal paperwork, ensuring everything is handled properly and efficiently.
Divorce Coaching – I provide coaching to clients to help them stay emotionally grounded, focused on their goals, and ready for the life they want to build after their divorce.
What sets me apart is the holistic approach I bring to the table. Divorce is overwhelming enough as it is, and navigating the legal process should be as straightforward as possible. With my services, clients not only get the legal assistance they need, but also the emotional support that’s so often lacking in traditional legal settings. This dual approach allows clients to feel empowered and supported throughout every step of their journey.
I’m especially proud of From We to Me, a platform that helps individuals shift their mindset from “We”—the couple they were—to “Me”—the individual they are becoming. It’s about helping people reclaim their sense of self during and after divorce, providing them with the tools to thrive in the next chapter of their lives.
Additionally, I’ve worked on developing a DIY Divorce Software to provide clients with a user-friendly option to handle their divorce paperwork themselves, with access to professional guidance when needed. This software is a reflection of my commitment to providing affordable, accessible legal services to those who may not be able to afford traditional legal fees but still need support.
The heart of Just Call Jodi Incorporated and From We to Me is about empowerment, clarity, and support. I want every client to feel confident and informed as they move through the divorce process. Whether they need legal documents, coaching, or a combination of both, I am committed to being there for them—guiding them through the tough times and helping them come out stronger on the other side.

What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
The best source of new clients for me has always been word of mouth. Over the years, I’ve built a reputation for providing not only expert legal services but also genuine support and guidance through what can be an incredibly difficult and emotional process. Clients who have worked with me know that I go above and beyond to make sure they feel empowered and confident in navigating their divorce or legal matters.
My deep professional experience as a Paralegal and Legal Document Assistant, combined with my personal experience navigating a divorce, allows me to offer a unique, empathetic approach. Clients appreciate that I understand both the legal intricacies and the emotional challenges of divorce. This dual perspective helps my clients feel heard, supported, and well-prepared to make the best decisions for their future.
I consistently receive referrals because I take the time to listen to my clients’ needs, offer personalized solutions, and ensure they have the tools and resources to move forward confidently. Word of mouth is powerful because it comes from clients who’ve had a positive experience and genuinely want to see others benefit from the same level of care and expertise.
Additionally, my focus on offering services that combine Legal Document Preparation with Divorce Coaching has helped me stand out. Clients appreciate having not just a legal assistant, but someone who can also guide them emotionally and strategically through the process. This approach resonates deeply with individuals who want a more comprehensive and supportive experience during their divorce.
Ultimately, the trust I’ve built with my clients through my combination of expertise, empathy, and personal experience has made word of mouth the most effective source of new clients for me.
