We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jodi Mason a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Jodi, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
The latest risk I took was moving to Florida… sure it’s been 9 years but it was still a risk. I had no family, in Florida, and did not do my research prior to moving. I had a job with Publix, and on a whim I put in a transfer. I thought there was no way I would get accepted, but 4 weeks later I was in Florida. I had a UHaul that held enough for a 1 bedroom apartment, had sold a lot of stuff, and made it to Florida. I do not regret it at all.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am the creator and host of the podcast That Florida Feeling, I started the podcast to talk about Florida, and I don’t mean the theme parks or beaches. I wanted to talk about the real Florida. The locals, the natives, and of course Florida Man.
I started the podcast when I had some time off work as a new hobby just to see what would happen and it took off.
The podcast is over a year old now, and it’s grown so much more than I imagined. You can find it on Spotify, Apple, Google Podcast, and a few other podcast sites. I do weekly episodes, and try to talk about all the fun and hidden parts of Florida.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding part is getting to grow as a podcaster. I was nervous when I started. I tripped over my words, and had no idea what I was doing.
I have grown so much since that first 10 minute episode. I’m more confident, outgoing, and sure of what I am talking about. I can say that being a podcaster has helped me grow as an individual, and helped me even in my career.
How did you build your audience on social media?
My social media journey has been up and down. The podcast has a Facebook Group, Facebook Page, Instagram, Twitter, and TikTok. I know that since different age groups use different ones it was important to create a space for the podcast on every platform.
You have to be consistent on social media or you are easily forgotten. I post weekly on all platforms, and I promote new episodes on all platforms. It takes time so don’t be discouraged if it doesn’t seem to take off right away.
