We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jocelyn Sipowicz. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jocelyn below.
Jocelyn, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
Initiative to iterate has been one of the most helpful keys to learning my craft of Print Design. In school and college, I created volumes of illustrations and paintings for many projects and assignments, perfecting stylistic skills with practice. Although I never studied true textile or garment construction, I was resourceful with the digital tools I had learned along the way, translating this artwork onto various prototypes that displayed my work diversely enough to land job opportunities in the industry anyway. From these experiences, I had visibility to the inner workings of product development in real time that taught me so much more than I would have learned through passive study.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I started my journey as a print and product designer in my hometown, Austin, Texas developing a love for both fashion and painting in school. To cultivate my craft and calling, I went on to graduate from the Savannah College of Art & Design (SCAD) with a degree in Illustration for surface design opening doors to incredible professional experiences. Over the course of my 10 years in the industry, I’ve had the pleasure of designing for some of the top names in Accessories, Apparel, and Home Decor creating artwork across unique brands and products. I became obsessed with seeing my stuff in stores all over the world, and inspiring others to put their own work out there, too!
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The best part of what I do is seeing a beautiful product I worked on in the world bringing joy to the people that interact with it, appreciating someone’s unique expression with a print artwork I designed, and knowing a piece I created made lasting memories.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
It’s an infectious validation this experience of seeing your work out in the world. Id love to inspire other artists to also put their own creative endeavors out there despite hesitations of former background differences or current capability limitations.
