We were lucky to catch up with Jocelyn Chin recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Jocelyn thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Let’s kick things off with a hypothetical question – if it were up to you, what would you change about the school or education system to better prepare students for a more fulfilling life and career?
If I could change the education system to better prepare students for a fulfilling life and career, I would suggest incorporating more classes that focus on real-world problems and practical solutions. This could include essential skills like how to file taxes, the process of purchasing and owning a home, and how to start and run a business. When I started college, I had no clear idea of what I wanted to do afterward. I wish there had been programs or courses that allowed students to explore different career paths and gain a deeper understanding of what those jobs actually entail. Now that I’ve graduated and become an entrepreneur, I realize how many challenges I’ve faced that I wish I had been better prepared for in college, especially when it comes to building and managing a business. If schools focused more on preparing students for career success and provided them with the right tools, I believe it would greatly help many young people navigate adulthood and its responsibilities more smoothly. Giving students practical knowledge and skills early on would make the transition to adulthood less overwhelming, setting them up for a more confident and fulfilling future.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Jocelyn Chin, and I am an Asian entrepreneur who owns four businesses. I own a Happy Lemon boba shop franchise, co-own an event planning company called Events and Chill, run a boba on-tap catering company named The Party Girl, and I created The Boba Balloon, the first-ever boba balloon. Much of my success has come from social media, as all of my businesses have had their viral moments on TikTok. Leveraging these viral moments has helped me drive attention and build traction for each of my ventures.I am most proud of my ability to leverage social media and learn the necessary skills to execute and start a business. What sets me apart from others is that I’m not afraid of failure or taking risks. I always remind myself that I’d rather try something and fail than live with the regret of never trying at all. This mindset has helped me build my businesses and continuously push myself toward new opportunities. I want my fans and followers to know that you can do anything you set your mind to, but it’s going to require sacrifices and complete commitment. I believe that “the secret sauce” to my success has been my dedication and making my goals a priority. That being said, it’s crucial to choose something you truly believe in and are passionate about. Finding something that drives you is key to staying motivated and achieving success. I started my journey as a business owner at 24, and it hasn’t been easy. I’ve had to learn a lot of things the hard way, but I choose to see these hurdles as learning lessons. Instead of letting challenges bring me down, I take them as opportunities to grow and learn something new, which has helped me improve along the way.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I would say all of my success is thanks to social media. I found my niche by listening to my followers, keeping up with trends, and understanding the need for authenticity online. While many business owners are hesitant to show what goes on behind the scenes, that’s exactly what has driven my business. My audience enjoys seeing my day-to-day life and the behind-the-scenes work, and I think that’s what really resonates with them.
My advice for new business owners is to break down your business into categories. Think of a few groups or key tasks that make up your business, and then focus on how you can showcase your brand within each of those groups. Look for ways to highlight those moments in an authentic way. It’s also important to spend time researching what’s out there—find similar businesses, analyze the market, and then ask yourself, “How can I compete and be different?” This will help you carve out your own unique space.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
As a business owner, I’ve faced countless hurdles and learned many lessons the hard way. Despite the challenges, I believe there is no problem without a solution. I approach each obstacle with the mindset that where there’s a will, there’s a way. Rather than letting these difficulties get me down, I view them as opportunities to improve and grow. I wouldn’t be where I am today without having faced and overcome these challenges—they’ve been crucial to my development and success. Whenever I encounter a hurdle, I don’t dwell on it. Instead, I immediately think of a backup plan and focus on how to resolve the issue. This proactive approach helps me tackle problems efficiently and keep moving forward.
