We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jocelyn Carreon. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jocelyn below.
Jocelyn, appreciate you joining us today. Can you share a customer success story with us?
One story that genuinely brought me to tears was when this lady came to me very emotional she was upset because it was the birthday of her daughter that had passed some years before. She told me she really wanted to bring her spirit to life through the flowers and the colors. I immediately got excited because making personal bouquets that have genuine meaning are why I love doing what I do. I walked her through her daughter’s favorite colors, any specific flowers she wanted to corporate, all the way down to the ribbon. She gave me a deadline and I promised her I’d deliver. That same day when she came back to pick up her order her face filled with excitement and tears filled her eyes. She told me “this is so her” and gosh that filled my heart with so much joy I can’t describe the fulfillment when I get to see my customers reactions. Any day that’s hard doing florals I remind myself why I do it.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
To start my name is Jocelyn Carreon. I went to school in Ennis, Texas, and I am 24 years old. I am the mother of one spectacular little girl who is 2 years old, almost 3, who is definitely keeping me busy. I am a full time college student who is almost done with my associates in Architecture, working towards finishing with my masters in Landscape urban design. So when i’m not busy being a florist, im busy being a college student and a mommy. I have always been very artistic and creative. That’s the main reason that led to me architecture so i could expand my drawing skills. I come from a family of very creative women. My mom has always been super into crafts such as making her own wreaths and making bows etc. My grandma had her own quince decorating business, them being into crafts made me know i also had it in me. When I first started my business it was 3 years ago in august when I was pregnant with my daughter. I had desperately wanted to find something I genuinely loved doing while being able to make an income staying home with my baby. I had stumbled upon a floral bouquet on pinterest and i was just stunned. It was so beautifully created the way they arranged it and the way it was wrapped, I had never seen anyone do flowers like that in my area. So that was the moment i decided to take a shot at it. I started by just buying flowers wherever i could find them and selling them at a discounted price. I did that for a long while, I was so focused on perfecting the craft I didn’t mind losing some revenue to start. I’m more in love with the wrapping style and unique designs that you can create with floral bouquets. My goal is for my flowers to stand out when you walk in a room. My post popular piece of work is my designers choice bouquets. My customers just give me a color and some minor details and they let me handle it from there. You can’t make a copy of a bouquet because every single flower is different. I’m so big on having my customers explore the endless options with colors and the variety that floral has to offer. I am also really big on themed bouquets, i love recreating movie themes, music artists, any theme you can think of, i can put into flowers. I absolutely love what i do i’ll continue this while i move through my landscape work in my career.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
I think what helped my reputation the most was the different style i introduced to my community. I know locally, what i was trying to accomplish was a first or a very rare opportunity to come by. Which worked for me because i was able to start connecting with customers very fast and start getting more experience to perfect my craft.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
A very big lesson I had to learn was everyone has their own style. I am so in love with other florists i have seen. I love their style and the way they run their business. I quickly had to learn that you have to find your own path, you have to find your own style, and you have to find what works for you.
