We recently connected with JoBrea Neal and have shared our conversation below.
Hi JoBrea, thanks for joining us today. One of our favorite things to brainstorm about with friends who’ve built something entrepreneurial is what they would do differently if they were to start over today. Surely, there are things you’ve learned that would allow you to do it over faster, more efficiently. We’d love to hear how you would go about setting things up if you were starting over today, knowing everything that you already know.
My name is JoBrea Neal and I’m a photographer from Houston Texas. If I were starting over what would I do differently? I would have believed in myself more when I first started. I didn’t have much motivation like I wanted to have for myself. I absolutely would’ve pushed myself harder to do more so that my name could have been more. Once I got a picture I took featured on ESPN and I slowly started getting published that motivated but I should’ve always kept going and grinding and never stopped.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is JoBrea Neal I’m 22 years old and I’m from Houston Texas. I started doing photography when I was 14. My parents have a production company KH-TV.COM and one day I took a camera from them and started taking pictures of the most random things. I slowly realized that I have an eye for photography. I love nature so I started with that taking pictures of plants and trees you know things that you see everyday. Then one day I said maybe I should try going to concerts and taking pictures of artists. I go into that in 2015 my first concert “job” was SchoolBoy Q then it went to Big Sean, August Alsina, Juice Wrld. I stated to have a passion for capturing moments you might never see again. My name started to get around a little bit I started going to more events and it was going good! I moved on to portraits you know family, graduation, birthdays, etc. once I started doing that I became a personal photographer for a local Houston Rapper aka my brother Cal Wayne. We did a few photo shoots and the very first one we ever did ended two pictures ended up being featured on ESPN because they did an article on him during the time the Astros won the World Series the first time. That moment made me so proud of myself knowing that many people viewed that article and saw my pictures. I started getting published more after that. I was featured in local magazines and books. When COVID hit I stopped and started focusing on other things which slowed me down majorly. I’m starting back now and I can’t wait to re-introduce myself to Houston and to the world. At the end of the day I just want to do this and strive for my love and passion for photography, my son, family, and everyone who supported me.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist or creative? For me it’s being able your express yourself through your work and sharing it with the world. It’s like a singer they can express themselves through song and we get to hear it. It’s a different type of feeling when I do a photo shoot and I get to direct and get my vision out for people to see. Just people seeing my work is rewarding to me.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
The one particular goal that’s driving my creative journey is success. I just want to do what I love and be successful. When something comes natural to you it isn’t hard to keep doing it. I just want to be the best photographer I can be. Work harder and strive for greatness!
