We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Joata a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi JOATA, thanks for joining us today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
I learned to do what I do by making and continuing to make mistakes along the way. Taking risks, hoping for the best, licking my wounds, picking myself back up and learning from those mistakes.
Honestly, I wouldn’t want to speed it up, I don’t know who I’d be in a parallel universe, and I’m content with where I am and where I am going.
The most essential skill that I have learned as musician is believing in myself but at the same time I am my own worst obstacle.
Just be kind to others and you’ll see the doors that open up.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
So I always say I was made in Puerto Rico but born in Massachusetts. Being a Latino, music was always essential to everything, especially if you were cleaning the house. (Ya tu sabes)
The industry is a funny thing to me because I rarely think of it. I make music because it is essential to my being, if I wasn’t making music I’m not sure where I’d be, hopefully out exploring space.
What makes me proud is bringing people together for an hour or two and giving them the space to be whoever they want to be.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I had to unlearn that I had to be out ALL the time networking my music.
Make amazing music that connects people and makes them FEEL and they’ll come. Also be excited about your creation, you can’t expect people to be excited, if you aren’t.
Living a boring life is a gift.

Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
Share your friends’ music as you would share a Top 40 artist who you don’t know. Be proud of your artist friends, it’s more valuable than you may know.
Spend a dollar on an independent artist and I can tell you from experience when that artist gets that notification that someone either shared or purchased their music, it’ll keep them going another day.
