Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Joaquin Martinez. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Joaquin thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
I grew up around music playing non-stop. My maternal grandmother is an operatic choir singer and blues musician “Little Milton” is my cousin on my paternal side. I did school talent shows, I sang “Hey Jude” acapella in 4th grade, and my uncle Steven accompanied me with his awesome acoustics. I was the coolest kid in class because my uncle had a band. (Shout out to Scruffy and the Janitors) I was the only kid who performed without lip-syncing along to a track. In middle school, I discovered EDM and DubStep and my performing name became “Hoodie Beatz” . My mom got me a customized hat and shirt. I still have that hat too. I danced my ass off, I was into “Hand tutting” and went off! HA! I got a standing ovation for that. No one knew what I was doing. They had never seen it before. I practiced all night for that performance. I also took an interest in instruments at that age. I chose the trumpet, but they stuck me with the tuba. I figured it was because I was the biggest kid in band class. I hated it, but I played the hell out of that thing all through highschool. In highschool my band teacher let me join the community band. I thought I was cool. We performed Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” one year and the entire East Hills mall was jumping! When I got my first real cell phone, I downloaded a beat making app and made a track and at 16 years old I wrote my first song. My mom heard it and she started signing me up for all kinds of performances, and I haven’t stopped since.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am Missouri native “Most Amazing Sound” aka M A S. I am a professional musician, DJ and Beat Boxer and visual artist. I am most proud of creating a platform for people like me who are innovative and eclectic.
I also promote Visual and performing arts as well, through Mas Art Co. We have been able to host a series of showcases locally with venues here in Wichita, KS and this provides a platform for people who like to showcase artistic talent.

Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
Ahh man there are so many! The first pivotal moment for me was when I jumped on stage at a rave and beat boxed for the entire crowd and it was streaming live and from that a group from the rave community recognized at the Wichita Riverfest with DJ Carbon and I went live again and performed the next day. I will never forget the look on my parents’ faces I could tell they were proud. I honestly started to feel accepted and like I belonged somewhere.
Another time someone asked me for an autograph. Then people started asking for a replica of my hat I used to wear, so we started making autographed “Zens” . I see my merch here and there and know I have people who appreciate and enjoy my talent, and that is the best reward in the game. I am super blessed.
