We recently connected with João Boiajion and have shared our conversation below.
João, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
When I was 12 years old I remember listening (and attempting to sing along… the audacity!) to Queen’s greatest hits album in the car radio with my mom pretty much every day on the ride home from school, I knew back then that I wanted to make something that touched me as deeply as that music did. When I first picked up a guitar I knew instantly that I just wanted to play that thing for every day of my life. I am still in love with music, singing and the guitar and that guides every single choice I make!
João, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
After I realized I loved music and wanted to pursue it as a career, I joined a variety of bands back home in Brazil to get experience playing with other people. I met a lot of super inspiring peers and mentors at the Escola de Música e Tecnologia, and grew and learned so much there before attending Berklee College of Music to deepen my knowledge and experience in music and to meet more people that would inspire me. I met both my producers, Fernando Tavares and Pedro Kayat there and we made an album together, and that’s what I’m most proud of right now, as it’s about to come out! We worked really hard on it and I can’t wait to finally have it out into the world.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
For me, the only thing that matters is that I can emotionally touch others. Success to me is people telling me they connected with the music and felt something. The world can sometimes feel like a really dark and terrible place and we can become so numb to it all, and I want to draw our attention to how important sensitivity is, even if sometimes it can hurt quite a bit! I also want to go on making music that makes people know they’re not alone in their struggles and that not everything is as nice as we see on social media. It’s okay to be realistic about life
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Making the music itself is my favorite part of being a musician. When I’m making stuff up and just playing music and having a good time with friends is my best ideas come out. The end results are never as great as the process, and that just makes the process itself the most rewarding thing! Making music also feels like therapy in a way, putting thoughts into sounds and words that help my mind deal with whatever it is I am going through. Music to me is such a magical thing and every time I play it I still feel like I did when I first picked up a guitar
