Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Joannie Lee. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Joannie thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What do you think it takes to be successful?
I think this is a very good question. I believe that success can be measured differently. It’s a questions that I ask to my new entrepreneurs. Some may think that success can be seen in the numbers and profit that you bring in and some may think that success is completing a daily task list, learning a new program, understanding different perspectives to understand opinions better, failing on something and learning how to do better next time.
I feel like I have both kinds of success. I want to see growth in profit and I want to be able to appreciate the “little wins” that can make me a better leader, decision maker, and overall human being.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Hi, my name is Joannie Lee and I am the Owner of Two Hands Wellness in San Diego, CA. I got into the Wellness Industry by skill and luck. I was fortunate enough to learn that I was a tactile learner and becoming a massage therapist become an easy skill for me to fall in love with. I then was able to connect with like minds and work in some of the best 5 Star Spas in San Diego.
From the 2008 recession, I learned who my clientele was: the clients that didn’t have enough time to take care of themselves. The beautiful think about Mobile Wellness is that we come to you on your time. You don’t even have to leave your house and look for parking. We come to YOU! Today, our clients are parents, travelers, Corporate Offices, and Wellness-Minded individuals.
The services we provide are: mobile massage (table and chair), yoga, meditation + breathwork, ergonomic education, and wellness retreats.
The most recent problem I had to solve was how to navigate through the pandemic. We were closed 3 times on 2020. At that time, I rebranded Two Hands Wellness, created a sister business, The Ergo Expert, and became a certified meditation and breathwork guide. I feel like I was just as busy during the pandemic than before. During the pandemic, I lost half of my staff, so I had to start rehiring again and really focused on finding quality Wellness Providers who are educated and have the skill set to represent Two Hands Wellness.
What sets us apart is we are not an app that you can just click a button on your phone. We take the time to get to know who our client is and what kind of service they are looking for. Another difference is that I am still providing massages just like some of my staff. Sometimes I work with them. I feel like they respect me a little more because I am doing the work with them.
I’ve been so proud of what I have created. This is our 10 Year Anniversary and I couldn’t ask for a better group of people to surround myself around with. We have about a 50% return rate with our clients and
we are constantly being referred to other businesses and people.
The main things I want people to know about Two Hands Wellness is that we a locally owned female business i San Diego providing jobs, education about mental health and provide overall Wellness to help people enjoy life and feel better in their bodies.
I get a lot of joy out of my job!
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
The best story I can think about is a recent one. It was during the pandemic and we were forced to close our business. At first, it was fun to sleep in everyday and day drink on a Wednesday, but that got old quick. during that time, there were Asian Hate Crimes roaming around the US. I had every emotion crawling all over my body. I was mad, I was sad, and I was helpless. A week before the world shut down, I went to a festival and a random guy yelled Coronavirus at me. What the heck was that about. I didn’t make that correlation until I walked away. I was being discriminated against! Growing up in Southern CA, I had every ethnicity and race around me, but now I was being talked down to simply because I am asian.
From Asian Hate to losing myself because I felt like my job defined me, I was depressed. I would randomly cry and just felt like I wasn’t anything. This is so unlike me and my personality. Then one day, I was scroll on Instagram and I found a free 28 day meditation course. Since I wasn’t doing anything else, I decided to take this course. I fell in love with this new technique called breathwork and really understood the different kinds of meditation and what mediation looked like to me. Having a consistent practice of meditation and breathwork made me realize that I am more than just my job. It opened my eyes to other possibilities. I then began the process of becoming a certified meditation and breathwork guide.
In my practice and what I like to educate on the most is calming down the nervous system, where we work on inhales and full exhales and then guiding my clients body and mind awareness.
i now have meditation and breathwork as one of the new services that we provide!
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
Yelp and Google has been a great source for new clients, but word of mouth has really made our company grow!
