We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Joanne Tang a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Joanne, appreciate you joining us today. Let’s start big picture – what are some of biggest trends you are seeing in your industry?
Unique French Tips
Over the past year, the French manicure has gone from polarizing to a red-carpet staple. Currently, nail artists are having fun dressing up the classic manicure, with everything from glitter to funky mushrooms, smiley faces, butterflies, and retro florals.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Joanne and I have over 20 years of experience as a Cosmetologist. I started doing hair at my parent’s salon in Vietnam in my early 20’s and continue the cosmetology industry in the US. I’ve owned multiple nail salons across Houston.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
Like many businesses, the most effective strategy for growing Nails by Yen is word of mouth along with providing good, quality services.
How do you keep your team’s morale high?
Giving employees the tools to ask for feedback is one tool that helps maintain high morale. The best way to increase the free flow of feedback is by supporting people to seek it themselves. Asking for feedback is a powerful approach to self-development, especially when it’s part of basic performance management. Requested feedback allows teams to demonstrate the care that everyone needs to feel engaged. Helping people ask for feedback in moments when they need it most allows them to take the reigns of their development so that they can master new skills and correct certain behaviors.
