We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Joanne Sanders a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Joanne thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
The story behind my mission is the importance of reading a physical book. Online reading is good but there is such a connection that my children have had and still have when it comes to them reading and holding a physical books to read. My children. are my inspiration they have always encouraged me. Their love and support has encourage my writing and inspired me to become a children’s author. I would be lost without them.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Reading and writing was always a true love of mines. I got into writing when I was young. It was when I became a mom that it really became something I love to do. I would interact and play characters with my children. My first three books are dedicated to my children. Moreover, my children are what I am most proud of and they inspire me.
I enjoy gardening and jigsaw puzzles of a 1000 pieces or more.

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
My resilience comes from my childhood. I was one of those children that was raped, beaten, and to make things worse had a teacher tell me “the only thing I would be good for is to be a custodial worker.” Although these things happen to me God put people in my life as well as my family and my wonderful children that inspired and encourage me.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
The lesson I had to unlearn was I am not a rap victim, a daughter from alcoholics, a women that is only good for cleaning toilets, and just plain dumb. The teacher and others who tried to instill that in me put this in my head. It was through the encourage of family members and wonderful friends – friendship that I learn and know better. Today, I see myself as a pleasantly plum woman, a wife, a mother, an author, teacher, a leader, an inspiration to to others, and a visionary.
