We recently connected with Joanna Rogers and have shared our conversation below.
Joanna, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
I took a risk starting my own private practice in a new city in Colorado. I was successfully able to market my work and connect with others in the community to continue to provide therapy services.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am a mental health therapist who works with adults dealing with anxiety, depression, mood disorders, trauma, life transitions, self esteem and pregnancy/postpartum challenges. I recently realized my love of working with pregnant and postpartum mothers. My specialized training is in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) which helps individuals heal from symptoms of emotional distress and life challenges. I am also trained in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Mindfulness and Motivational Interviewing. I can provide therapeutic sessions to both Colorado and Arizona residents. My goal is to create a safe and supportive environment for my clients to get started and make lasting change. My clients feel connected and empowered to work through their personal struggles when in my office. I thoroughly enjoy helping my clients feel more confident with their emotions and in themselves, overall.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
I was successfully building my private practice with a close friend I’m Gilbert, AZ when my husband and I knew I was time to grow a family. I became pregnant in 2021 and had to take maternity leave starting March, 2022. I quickly realized that I needed more than 3 months to learn to be a mom before getting back to my work. During my maternity leave from March 2022 through January 2023, I quit my own private practice in Arizona, moved my little family to Grand Junction, Colorado, completed my licensure exam for my clinical licensure, became licensed in Colorado, and opened up my own private practice by myself in Colorado. All of this happens while figuring out motherhood and my baby. This was a huge pivot in my life because I dreamed of being at my previous position for a really long time and I became a mom who not only worked at home, but worked in my career field of helping others.
Training and knowledge matter of course, but beyond that what do you think matters most in terms of succeeding in your field?
I have many trainings in therapeutic modality and have sat under some great teachers, however I feel the reason I am successful in my field is having the ability to engage authentically with my clients. When you are working with vulnerable people, you have to create a safe place for them to feel accepted and heard. My genuine personality helps clients realize that I am there for them and I am not going to judge them based on their emotions and past mistakes. Being authentic is truly important in the field of therapy.
