We recently connected with Joanna Heart and have shared our conversation below.
Joanna, appreciate you joining us today. So, naming is such a challenge. How did you come up with the name of your brand?
My coffee shop is called the Palm Coffee Bar, because originally my inspiration came from my Cuban heritage. I was visiting Miami often and was inspired by the Cuban decor, the tropical vibes, and I wanted to bring that back to LA so that I share the feeling of being on vacation & my cuture with my community! Our logo is actually a Monstera, because we used to sell plants, but we got so busy that we had to cut back bringing plants in, especially some of the more difficult ones! You can still find plants on our shelves here, and there were still consider our self the original coffee& plants 😉

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My background was in fashion, recruiting and graphic design, and I had an obsession with coffee so I wanted to put together all the things I loved in one space to be able to share it with my community! Having a really quality specialty coffee was super important to me, and so I teamed up with Provision out of Arizona who I had previously worked with to create the perfect blend for my shop. We love being involved in the blend process with our roster directly and it feels like I have direct access to my own little coffee community.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
I’ve had many failed businesses prior to opening The Palm Coffee Bar. I don’t think I ever really believed that I could do it fully so I always had one foot on the platform and the other on the train. The Palm Coffee Bar is the first time that I actually took a full chance on myself, quit my day job and put everything I had into some thing it was scary as hell, but I realized that if you were going to chase a dream, you’re going to have to go for it full fledged! It is not been an easy journey. The first year was really difficult, lots of tears fell, because no one knew who we were, the second year just when we got on our feet Covid hit, and so we had to adapt and adjust through the pandemic. We barely made it, but our loyal customers made it easier for us to stick around, we felt loved by the community and I always wanna make sure that I’m sending that love back into the community!
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
The biggest lesson that I had to unlearn is that if you’re going to take a risk on yourself, you better be full in it!!!! Iif you don’t, you’re going to fail! Either way you are in charge. I learned how much I held myself back by my own limiting beliefs and that was the first thing that I suggest to smash and really work through it if you’re going to open a business. Until you shift your mindset things won’t grow. You have to think big picture, keep dreaming and disassemble your limiting beliefs. If you can do that, you can do anything. Think big, take risks, it’s scary AF, but if you do the right research, trust your gut, anything is possible with the knowledge that you will find as long as you apply it. NEVER STOP GROWING & wanting better!
