We were lucky to catch up with JoAnn Emale recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi JoAnn, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
I never planned on being an inventor of a beauty device. I was simply a beauty queen who was tired of getting makeup on her sponsored gowns when changing clothes. When I realized there was no real solution to preventing makeup transfer, I spent 6 years learning and vetting the perfect manufacturer to create this device. Maskee is the first and only patent pending beauty device that prevents makeup transfer when changing. This breathable and see through device is one of a kind and will revolutionize how we change everyday.
JoAnn, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am the inventor of Maskee® the beauty device that prevents makeup from getting on clothes when changing. As a former beauty queen and current entrepreneur, I experienced many scenarios that caused me to find a solution to a common problem in regards to makeup transfer and quick changes. From there, Maskee® was born!
Have you ever had to pivot?
When I was in the process of learning trademarks, I decided to secure the name Maskee in January 2020. The name was approved March 2020 right before the world shut down and everyone was searching Mask. I learned quickly about the power of owning your intellectual property. I was then met with supply chain demands due to covid, but I learned that what’s meant to happen will happen and all we can do to be successful is adapt and adjust.
Can you talk to us about manufacturing? How’d you figure it all out? We’d love to hear the story.
When I began the process of manufacturing Maskee®, I truly struggled with finding people who understood my vision and were willing to work with my MOQ. I spent a year going to tailors, the LA fashion District, and local small businesses to find a vendor. I thankfully went back to my pageant roots and found a former dress maker of mine overseas. They now manufacture Maskee® for us! You can definitely say we got lucky.
