We recently connected with Joana Jordao and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Joana thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
I started learning graphic design at university while pursuing my bachelor’s degree, but my passion and curiosity about design started while I was still at school. I have always liked and appreciated photography. Back then, I used to carry my camera around and take photos of nature. My focus was flowers, trees, and animals, and I wanted to explore them from different angles. However, after taking pictures, I still felt it needed some editing. It was at this time that I noticed my passion for design. Without any course, I used to work on my photos in Photoshop and enhance them through lighting, colors, etc. The more I dig into Photoshop, the more I find it fascinating. After four years at university, I graduated as a graphic designer but I didn’t stop there. The world is constantly changing, and technology is always ascending, and we need to keep it up and expand our knowledge. Since graduation, I have done other courses like photography, digital marketing, advanced design and communication, and many other things to improve my skills and open a whole new range of possibilities for the future. Today, I have won four awards and started my design studio. To me, the key to success is to stay curious, focused, and driven. Wanting to improve yourself and your work is the best skill you can have. Your tenacity won’t let problems get in your way, and people will notice the quality of your work. Even after ten years of graduation, I attend seminars and conferences, search for tutorials, and take classes. There is always something new that you can learn, and it only depends on you to improve yourself.
Joana, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
During the pandemic, I was laid off from my full-time job, and it was at this time that I decided to take the opportunity to open my creative studio. At Cherish Impression, I not only offer graphic design, branding, and fine art wedding stationery but also a one-of-a-kind experience. Here, every project is unique and deserves special attention, and my goal is always to exceed expectations. To achieve this, I listen to my client’s needs, offer them unlimited revisions, add all the acknowledgment I gathered through these years, and, of course, countless hours of work. It is an easy, stress-free process! I take care of every detail of a project from start to finish. For example, our custom wedding invitation process involves designing, printing, assembling, addressing, and mailing all invitations to guests. All the client has to do is relax and wait for those beautiful RSVP cards to arrive. Currently, my main focus with Cherish Impression is to expand within the wedding industry. I love designing exquisite wedding invitations, and many couples don’t know how personal and unique their invitations can be. Custom wax seals, venue painting, envelope liners, and vintage stamps are just a few options for all the meaningful items you can add to your wedding suite. I often remind my clients that the save the date and the invitation are the first interaction their guests will have at the wedding, and the same will set the tone for the big day, setting up expectations for it to come.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Being able to connect with people in a profound, meaningful way. Connect not only through words but also through colors, shapes, drawings, etc. It is unbelievable how much design can influence our lives and decisions.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I believe the experience my clients had working with me. People can see the love and devotion I put into every project. When working with someone, I want to ensure the design resonates with the client. My work is not complete if my customer is not 100% satisfied. It can be challenging, but I learned along the way that if your goal is profit, you will not stand out from the crowd, and believe it, your customers will notice that. Working with something you love makes you happy, builds relationships, and encourages you to do your best every day.
