We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Joachim Moore. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Joachim below.
Hi Joachim , thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
The most meaningful project has been a historical/theatrical project I do annually that highlights three legendary leaders of American society. It’s meaningful to me because it educates children and adults alike on people/events they may not have learned in standard education.
I had the honor of premiering the piece to the residents of Palm Springs, which garnered solid reception and praise for not only the performance, but the amount of knowledge taught and applied. This particular play, Medgar X’n James is a solo-actor show that tells the story of each historical legend, act by act (Medgar Evers, Malcom X, and James Baldwin).
One of the biggest compliments to me is when some one can come up to me after one of my shows and tell me that I did a great job telling the story from a historical standpoint; almost placing them in the time of the period. It’s awesome because that’s exactly what I try to do! Art is fun, but it is also my vocation; the best way I can serve society.
Joachim , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am originally from Wisconsin. As most of us Badgers are, we’re highly proud of just that: being from the Midwest. The grind a good amount of us have/had there is a bit different than either coast may have to endure (I mean idk, the NYC is a grind too, haha). The harsh weather molds us, the food warms us, and the sports playoff appearances sustain us, especially in Milwaukee :) .
All that to say that perhaps that’s where my discipline starts- home. Raised by tough but loving, blue-collar parents and being (sometimes) playfully roasted by my siblings attributed to my character and self proclaimed wit. The youngest of six, I always felt like the weird artsy one, and knew I’d make my way out West.
At first I got into the industry just strictly for the art, I still do for the most part- but now that I have a lil’ man, the currency always helps but for me, the start was initially to understand and explore the various attributes to human behavior. That was always the base work for me, even as I child. Now that I am older, I have a better understanding of humans, what they do, and why, although aspects of it will forever be a mystery.
Aside from acting in professional or personal projects, I started a group in 2014 geared towards creating works of art that people can learn from and feel a connection to. The Inner Circle Arts Society provides dynamic art in sculpture, paint, theater, film and music. Not only that, the outreach we do is important; teaching art and film in underserved communities – showing youth and adults alike the power of voice- and how important it is to be unique! I get geeked just writing about it because, honestly that’s where it’s at: serving others, artistically.
This is our first year as a nonprofit organization and I am so proud of us. As a writer, we have the pleasure of working though my 400 scripts (play and film) in order to create art that’s geared towards a social cause. What drives me in the work that I do is two things, my son and time. My son represents my family as a whole; its my hope that the legacy I can leave will be one of education, generational artistic performances, and absolute swag- I’m joking; but I want my sons confidence to be fueled by me, as mine was through my awesome dad.
I take pride in being an actor-vist. I am an artist cares about human life and the well-being of all; even on my grumpiest days, haha. It’s relative to who I am and what I do. Matter of fact, a big portion of the money I get, I put back into the nonprofit in order to spread more art around the US, as we’re stretched across multiple cities!
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
One thing I had to learn as I added being a businessman to my artistic resume, is that not everyone is rooting for you. I also learned to protect my art; make sure that there can be profit, but the base of the creation should be rooted in understanding. We’re worked with organizations who saw our art as a way to make money on their end without true assistance and nurturing. That can be damaging to nonprofits who put all their eggs in one basket, which is why I love that we are spread across the US! More art to display and more people to benefit from it!
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding parts of the art I create is that it comes from within, with positive intention- and people feel that wether its through painting, modeling, or acting. Another great thing about what I do is that I get to talk to various amounts of people; I get to mentally record those personalities and behaviors in order to emulate that it somewhere down there line. I did go to college, but for my continued courses, I simply engaged with more people, which is interesting because I don’t truly consider myself to be a people person haha.
