Jo, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
I’ve had the privilege of working on several impactful projects, and today I’d like to highlight two. In one instance, a client entrusted me with creating a memory gnome from a cherished flannel shirt belonging to her late husband. Another project involved crafting a gnome for Dr. Sandra Lee, also known as Dr. Pimple Popper. Both recipients expressed immense satisfaction with their gnomes, which was incredibly rewarding.

A Passion for Crafting: From Meme to Mission
My artistic journey began with a love for crafting and a penchant for transforming unexpected materials. In 2021, the Bernie Sanders mittens meme sparked inspiration for my first gnome creation – a miniature Bernie himself. The positive response on social media led to a wave of requests, prompting me to craft a limited edition of “Bernie Mitten” gnomes for a charity auction to benefit our local food kitchen. This initiative solidified gnome-making as a fulfilling hobby, and I’ve continued to create them ever since, primarily based on client requests.
My repertoire extends beyond playful pop-culture references. I’ve had the honor of crafting a Ruth Bader Ginsburg gnome as a tribute to this remarkable woman. Holiday and birthday-themed gnomes are some of my personal favorites. However, the most rewarding challenges come with custom “look-alike” pieces.
Sustainability is also a core value in my work. Most of my gnomes stand at 11 inches tall, and some designs utilize upcycled baby clothes for a unique touch, making them one-of-a-kind creations.
My client base has diversified, encompassing professionals like chiropractors, dentists, nurses, and teachers, alongside girl scouts, sports enthusiasts, and movie lovers. The possibilities for gnome creation are truly boundless, fueled by unbridled imagination.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of crafting gnomes is undoubtedly the joy they bring to others. Whether it’s a playful pop-culture reference, a cherished tribute, or a whimsical birthday surprise, each gnome becomes a personalized piece that sparks a smile or evokes a cherished memory. Witnessing these connections and the happiness my creations bring is the driving force behind my passion for gnome-making.

My gnome-making journey thrived thanks to the power of social media. By actively engaging with online communities dedicated to all things gnome, I discovered a passionate and supportive audience. Participating in these groups allowed me to showcase my creations, connect with fellow gnome enthusiasts, and gain valuable feedback that helped refine my craft. This online presence not only fostered a sense of community but also organically attracted potential customers who were delighted by the whimsical world of my gnomes.
