We recently connected with J’moi Liburd and have shared our conversation below.
J’moi , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What do you think it takes to be successful?
In my opinion, the main keys to success are discipline and consistency. When someone has the ability to be discipline, they create the ability to stay focused on tasks, assignments, goals, and to persevere in difficult times. When someone has consistency, it ensures progress is made steadily and efficiently. One major difficulty I had was through the pandemic. Times were uncertain, unemployment grew, and people were not spending money on clothes as they usually do. Inevitably, my business was not doing the best but I stayed with it despite having emotions about not continuing the brand. Instead I worked on aspects of my brand daily. I broke it down to each aspect of my business plan, I got more familiar with the market, I worked on designing products, I learned more things than I ever knew about the business through that pandemic period by being discipline and consistent even when I was not getting any sales.
J’moi , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is J’moi Liburd and I am originally from the British Virgin Islands. I am a God fearing man. I live in Houston Texas and I am the Founder and CEO of Alwayz Bin Phresh. Coming over to America, I liked and adapted to the style of dressing when I first moved to Florida in 2013. At the time, being able to dress like that was new to me because we wore uniforms back in the islands. The first thing that interested me at the time were retro Jordans. I would spend a lot of money on Jordan’s and clothes to match. When getting the clothes to match, there were little things that I would like different on the clothing so I thought “Hey, I’m spending all this money, I should try starting my own clothing line to get things made exactly the way I want them” With that being said, I sell streetwear apparel. Things like, sweatsuits, tracksuits, jackets, T-shirts, hats, dresses for the ladies etc. I think what sets me apart from other brands with all due respect is the creativity and originality of my products. In such an over saturated market, selling clothing that is different from everyone else helps you to stand out. One of things that I am most proud of was learning and building in areas that I was not really good at especially because I am in control of every aspect of my business. From designing my ideas all the way to shipping products out to my supporters/customers. What I want everyone that may not know about my brand is that we take pride in producing quality products, affordable prices, and most importantly making sure that our customer feel Phresh while wearing Alwayz Bin Phresh!
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
Making designs on a paper or canvas is one thing, but getting made is another. When I first started getting the designs made, I thought it was just that, getting them made… I never thought of the other aspects that go into getting clothes made. After my first official release, once the shipment of shirts came in, I realized that the quality of print was not great. I had just told my manufacturer at the time to make some shirts with the design that I had presented him. After that, I did my research on the different types of logos for example there are different type of prints, there’s embroidery, there’s applique, there’s sublimation, etc. So after doing my research on the different types of logos, I tried my second release thinking that I had everything on lock at that point. My next mistake was not knowing about sizing. Every manufacturer has there own standardized size chat and the supplier I had, size chart was off by 2 sizes. Again, losing money on that particular release, I showed resilience on trying to perfect quality and sizing so that our customers can enjoy the creativity of our designs and the durability in our products.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
In my opinion, I think that being the owner of my business and still being on the front line talking to my supporters and customers, being open to suggestions from customers on things they would like to see us release, as well as focusing on quality are a few things that helped build the reputation within the market. At Alwayz Bin Phresh, we put our customers first, and we strive to perfect quality.
