We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful J’Mai Edouard. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with J’Mai below.
J’Mai, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Getting that first client is always an exciting milestone. Can you talk to us about how you got your first customer who wasn’t a friend, family, or acquaintance?
Every entrepreneur remembers their first genuine client—the first one that believes in you and wants to pay you for your services. That relationship is a pivotal moment when your dream begins to feel like a tangible reality. For Mai’s Balloonery & Decor, that unforgettable milestone came when Antoinette White of Home Clean Heroes stumbled upon one of my balloon displays as I was getting my house cleaned. Her request? A garland for a ribbon-cutting ceremony with the Columbia County Chamber of Commerce.
To say I was nervous would be an understatement. Until then, my experience with balloons was personal, never corporate, much less outdoors. Outdoor events present a unique challenge for balloon decor; the balloons must be resilient, capable of withstanding the elements to avoid any mishaps during crucial moments like a ribbon cutting. My initial response was self-doubt, a creeping imposter syndrome whispering that I was out of my depth.
Determined to overcome this, I enrolled in a balloon decor class. The more I learned, the more my confidence grew. Antoinette’s persistence was a constant push forward, turning my hesitation into determination. Pricing was another hurdle—I had no baseline for corporate events. After thorough research, I set a fair price, keen on providing value without underselling my service.
Armed with newfound knowledge and confidence, I prepared for the event. Pink T-shirts were ordered for myself and my first assistant, my little sister, Janeria, marking our first official uniform. We filled my car with as many balloons as it could hold and set off to make the vision come to life. What started as a balloon garland evolved into a spectacular balloon wall, transforming the ribbon-cutting ceremony into a visually stunning event. The photos were fabulous, capturing not just the beauty of our work but the essence of a momentous occasion.
Reflecting on that day, the excitement and pride in our accomplishment are palpable. Antoinette’s trust was the catalyst for Mai’s Balloonery & Decor stepping into the broader world of ballooning as a service. It was a leap of faith, an adventure in creativity and learning that paid off, symbolized by that first dollar earned. That experience was more than a transaction; it was the beginning of believing in the potential of my business and myself.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
From a young age, the art of celebration has been a cornerstone of my life, inspired by my family’s tradition of creating joy and lasting memories through photography and cake making. My journey into the world of event design wasn’t immediate. With a background in Electrical Engineering and Engineering Management, I found my true passion resided in the creative realm, particularly after organizing my high school graduation party nearly two decades ago. This passion was reignited by a request from Antoinette White, leading to my professional foray into balloonery. Mai’s Balloonery & Decor was born from this confluence of skill, passion, and opportunity, specializing in bringing vibrancy and joy to life’s milestones.
Our services extend far beyond balloons. With an organic style that emphasizes texture and depth, we’ve become a one-stop-shop for balloon décor, custom backdrops, and much more. From intimate gatherings to grand celebrations, we cover every detail, allowing our clients to immerse themselves in their events worry-free. Our approach is unique; we see competitors not as rivals but as partners in elevating our niche industry. This philosophy, along with our commitment to excellence and creativity, sets us apart.
The road has not always been smooth, with exposure being a significant challenge. But, through innovative marketing partnerships and leveraging social media with the help of our Event Committee, we’ve carved a space for our brand. Despite occasional doubts, the support of my loved ones and the positive reception from clients have been my cornerstone, reminding me that fear is not a marker of failure but of unexplored potential.
What I’m most proud of is not just the business I’ve built, but the community I’ve engaged and the personal growth I’ve experienced along the way. To potential clients, followers, and fans, know this: Mai’s Balloonery is more than a service; it’s an embodiment of love for life’s celebrations and a commitment to making your special moments unforgettable. We thank you for allowing us to share in our passion and to create memories that will last a lifetime. It’s with this optimism that we continue to grow and innovate.
Lastly, I’d be remiss if I did not thank my husband, children, parents, in-laws, siblings and nieces and nephews for volunteering their time to help make MBD a reality!.
Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
My entrepreneurial journey and the philosophy guiding Mai’s Balloonery & Decor have been profoundly influenced by a blend of modern insights and timeless wisdom. Among the contemporary resources that have reshaped my understanding of wealth, business management, and personal growth are Amanda Francis’s ‘Rich as F*ck,’ which emboldened me to pursue my dreams with an abundance mindset; Rachel Rodgers’ ‘We Should All Be Millionaires,’ which instilled in me the belief that financial success is attainable and deserved; and Tom Wheelwright’s ‘Tax-Free Wealth,’ which provided me with the knowledge to navigate the complexities of tax efficiency for wealth building.
Woven into the fabric of these modern teachings is the timeless wisdom of Proverbs 18:16: ‘A gift opens the way and ushers the giver into the presence of the great.’ This proverb serves as a foundational principle, reminding me that our unique talents and offerings have the power to create opportunities, foster connections, and make a significant impact. It underscores the importance of generosity, the value of our gifts, and the potential for our contributions to open doors to new possibilities and realms of success.
Together, these resources and Proverbs 18:16 shape a management philosophy that is as much about achieving personal and business success as it is about making a meaningful difference. They teach me that true success comes from leveraging our gifts in service to others, pursuing our goals with determination, and always seeking to grow both personally and professionally. Through Mai’s Balloonery & Decor, I strive to embody these principles, ensuring that every service we provide not only meets a need but also brings joy, adds value, and enriches lives.
