We were lucky to catch up with JLR recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, JLR thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
My love for Music and the Arts has always just been part of me. I started playing piano at about 6, after that I joined musical theatre, was in dance, learned guitar, all while practicing painting and drawing. I’ve never lost that energy, to this day I love picking up any new creative thing I can find just to try and tell a story with it. Art is everywhere, you just need to know where to look.
JLR, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m a self-produced musician, artist, producer, and DJ from Dallas, professionally known as JLR. Music has always been something I’ve been very passionate about. From a young age I always loved the arts, especially music. I started by learning piano some, than moved to singing in local musicals and choirs, from there it blossomed into a full passion and drive to learn everything I possibly could about music and art. I’m primarily a rock artist, but recently I have been trying to branch out and experiment further into new genres and styles including jazz, hip/hop, rap, pop, funk, and many more! I really just create whatever feels right at that time, and I think it provides a bit of sincerity in my music I hope my listeners can relate to and appreciate.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
My whole life I’ve been surrounded by music, so it’s just always come natural to me to express myself through it. My songs, especially lately have really been an outlet for me. I think we all use music for that reason at some point in our lives, one way or another. I really try to make music that people can relate to and know is genuine. And when I see someone has connected with a message in one of my songs, it’s just an indescribable feeling to know I can make someone feel less alone in whatever they’re going through.
Have you ever had to pivot?
I didn’t want to believe it at first; rock was kind of my first love in music. But I’ve found it increasingly more true over the years that rock is, in fact, dead. And while there are staples of the genre that will live in some hearts forever, the appetite for new rock music has dwindled over the years. It’s left a lot of artists like me looking for new avenues for our voices to be heard.
