We were lucky to catch up with Jinseo Kim recently and have shared our conversation below.
Jinseo, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
I had the incredible opportunity to follow the entire process of the Infiniti brand’s C-segment coupe SUV project leading one of the final proposals, which was my very first project upon joining Nissan Design America. From the concept vehicle stage to mass production, I was deeply involved in every aspect. My initial sketches were selected and developed into a concept car, and a teaser image was unveiled at the 2023 Tokyo Motor Show. Collaborating closely with the engineering and aerodynamics teams, I ensured that we met legal requirements and target drag coefficients while maintaining the integrity of the initial design. This project was not only a significant milestone for me, as it allowed me to walk through the entire development process, but it also culminated in my design being chosen as one of the final two options, which is currently in development at headquarters.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
From a young age, my enthusiasm for drawing cars has profoundly shaped my life. Growing up in Korea, I became fascinated with identifying every vehicle on the streets of my hometown. At just 13, I took a bold step and traveled alone to the United States, fueled by a clear ambition: to become a car designer and broaden my cultural perspective. My primary aspiration was to gain admission to the renowned Art Center College of Design, and I committed myself fully to that goal. My educational journey spanned from junior high in Seattle, Washington, to high school in Elkhorn, Nebraska, each location offering unique experiences. Ultimately, I arrived at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, where I had the incredible opportunity to learn from and collaborate with some of the most inspiring figures in the industry.
Along the way, I actively pursued internships with companies like Honda, BYD, and Volvo. After graduating, I was fortunate to join prestigious car manufacturers such as Volvo and Nissan, where I currently work. These positions have enabled me to engage in both conceptual and production car design, deepening my understanding of automotive design within vibrant and creative settings while contributing to the future of the industry.
My journey so far has been a testament to the impact of passion and determination, and I remain inspired by the ever-evolving world of automotive design that surrounds me.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
I prefer to identify myself as a creative individual rather than an artist, as I believe that true artists possess a level of creativity that exceeds my own. However, I take pride in my ability to innovate and design within the constraints of various parameters. In my role within the automotive industry, I find great fulfillment in witnessing how my creations inspire others and evoke excitement.
While aesthetics certainly play a crucial role in my designs, I am particularly fascinated by the functional aspect of automobiles. These vehicles serve not only as modes of transportation but also as essential tools that support people in their daily lives. It is remarkable to see how a car can seamlessly integrate into an individual’s routine, becoming an integral part of their experiences. The ability of a well-designed vehicle to facilitate memorable moments and contribute to significant life events is truly captivating.
There is a profound sense of reward that comes from being a creative individual in automotive design. Knowing that my work has the potential to enhance people’s lives and experiences fills me with a deep sense of purpose. Each project presents an opportunity to solve real-world challenges, and the satisfaction of seeing my designs come to life and positively impact others is unparalleled. Ultimately, the joy of creating something that resonates with people, fosters connection, and enriches their everyday journeys is what fuels my passion for this field.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My mission as a creative individual in the automotive design industry is to enhance everyday experiences through innovative and functional vehicle design. I strive to create automobiles that are not only aesthetically pleasing but also seamlessly integrate into the lives of their users. My goal is to develop vehicles that serve as essential tools, supporting individuals in their daily routines while fostering memorable moments along the way. I believe that every car has the potential to enrich a person’s life, becoming an integral part of their journey and experiences. By focusing on the intersection of functionality and emotional resonance, I aim to inspire and uplift those who interact with my designs, ultimately contributing to a more connected and enjoyable world. This commitment to enhancing lives through thoughtful design drives my creative journey and fuels my passion for innovation in the automotive realm.
