Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jinn Wraith. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Jinn, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
Societal norms, following traditional paths, listening to the outside world on how you should live your life or make decisions has always been very mundane to me. I’m not necessarily sold on any ideas of how humanity originated, therefore I’ve always had a hard time being receptive of my peers’ attempts to place their upbringing and morals on me just because that’s all they were taught growing up. Since I can remember, there’s never been a time where I didn’t march to beat of my own drum. Naturally that flowed seamlessly into the ethos of NVIZHEN. The idea of designing your life exactly how you want it be from the smallest decision to the biggest gives me so much joy. We don’t want to be apart of the fashion system or art world, we want to create our own universe, releasing collections and projects when we want, not when the season calls for it. We want to present in our own way, not just the traditional way of runway show after runway show, or just an instagram lookbook for people to repost and like. We’re perfectly fine with the unknown, the statements that leave you stumped to further question the why. To us, we don’t evolve without the curiosity of what could be, not what should be.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I was into fashion before I even knew I was. Since like 2 or 3 years old, I was already picking out and matching my outfits, trying on new clothes and refusing to take them off because of how I felt in them. Naturally I evolved my taste in garments and styling as I got older. The energy of thrifting early on in high school for me is really what got my mind racing on what I could do with garments. Finding an untagged garment that could either be a womenswear or menswear piece that fit me perfectly really inspired me to experiment with the way I dressed. There were other times where I might’ve find a good piece, but it didn’t fit me how I wanted so I figured out a way to fit it to my liking. That could be by taking pieces off that specific garment and adding it with another to elevate it, or just simply cropping a piece that was too big, or layering a piece that was bit smaller with something bigger to make it a whole look in the end. All of that combined shaped me into becoming a designer. When NVIZHEN was created we wanted to push the boundaries of normal everyday wear. Multi-functinal garments are timeless. The styling and outfit ideas are endless when you can take a flight suit apart and just wear the top piece as a jacket with something underneath or vice versa, wearing the bottoms with another top. That’s what NVIZHEN is, a place where you can mix and match without feeling the need to put 2 or 3 other brands on your body to complete your look. A sense of minimalism in the way that you don’t have to be the loudest in room to make the most noise, yet the simplicity/functionality of the pieces you wear speak louder than words or tagging the brand in your IG post.
We’d love to hear about how you met your business partner.
My business partner/ cofounder Amari got introduced to me back in college at University of North Carolina Greensboro through another friend of mine who was his roommate on campus freshman year. We hit it off quick, but it had nothing to do with fashion necessarily, just a natural friendship/brotherhood that culminated after hanging out more and more. Sophomore year of college we lived together in an apartment on campus, so we started spending a lot more time together on a daily basis. At the time he was in school for nursing as I was studying fashion design, nonetheless, we had a commonality for good fits and standing out from the crowd. Initially when NVIZHEN first was created it was a one man show, but Amari was very instrumental in helping with the production of our first capsule collection. The initiative and support he showed towards what I was bringing to life really made it easy when asking him to be apart of the brand. He accepted without hesitation and I couldn’t have asked for a better partner to run this company with. We established early on that there is no place for sugar coating or beating around the bush when it comes to the designs/ideas we express though NVIZHEN. We’re creating our own design language through each other with shared reference points and common ideals for how we see the world of fashion for now and the future.
How do you keep in touch with clients and foster brand loyalty?
At the moment, majority of our connection/conversations we share with our clients are through social media. Although, we debuted our first full collection on the runway in downtown Greensboro back in October ’22 with a follow up pop-up shop, about a month later. We really appreciate and want to continue the idea of being hands on in person with our audience when it comes to how we present our collections. The energy of bringing together all walks of life to view and experience our work is a feeling like no other. Being questioned on where we were mentally when creating certain garments or just supportive comments and conversations with an audience that might’ve never witnessed something as such in person is such an addictive emotion that we want to create every time we release to the public. We never want to get to a point where consumers are simply just being consumers of our product, and not understanding what it is they are buying and how it could further expand their wardrobe/palette.
