Jinlin, appreciate you joining us today. Can you share an important lesson you learned in a prior job that’s helped you in your career afterwards?
The most important experience I had was during my last internship in a medical company. My peer advisor hand over me a project which was design the flow for an app to pair with our new product. I need to link and communicate with the professionals from different departments to get to know more about the features of this products and some constrains and requirements of pairing a device from the tech and secure perspectives. Also, I collaborated with UX researchers to conduct usability testing for the workflow that I designed and gained as much as as feedback from our patients. After this experience, I realized that as designers, not only we should solve problems but also need to think from a more comprehensive perspective.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
Before coming to SCAD to get my second degree, I have no idea what is the goal of my life and career in the future. During the study of my master’s degree, I found I like to conduct research and figure out users thoughts, behaviors and feedback. That actually intrigues me to learn more about UI/UX. Then I had my internship last year at a medical device company as a UX designer. This whole process is not easy for me at all, because for most of the companies, I’m just a student who has graphic design backgrounds without any UI/UX working experience. So I have to improve my professional skills, try to get some certificates, and use my works to prove that I’m capable with the skills and have the potentials in this field. What I learned from that is stay curious to try different things and keep learning throughout your whole life. I think what makes me proud is I’m a fast learner and not afraid of challenges. Those kinds of qualities push me moving forward to become a better designer.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
I realized that the more skills that designers are capable with, the better they can present their works in a creative way. Therefore, I really want to enrich my skill sets this year before graduating from school. For example, learn more about 3d and animation programs. Long term goal for me is to work with big corporates and gain some experiences and their design thinking and creative process.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
I think the most rewarding aspect of being an creative/designer is to use visuals as a tool to tell a story or solve problems that people have in real life. Design is much more meaningful than just making things appealing to people or elevate business value for products.
