We were lucky to catch up with Jing Yao recently and have shared our conversation below.
Jing, appreciate you joining us today. It’s easy to look at a business or industry as an outsider and assume it’s super profitable – but we’ve seen over and over again in our conversation with folks that most industries have factors that make profitability a challenge. What’s biggest challenge to profitability in your industry?
In the healthcare industry, one of the biggest challenges to profitability is balancing regulatory compliance with user experience while also gaining user trust and adapting to the rapidly changing needs of users. At Klarity Health, one of my responsibilities was to ensure that patients could easily book appointments while all data processes complied with HIPAA and other privacy regulations. This required me to carefully balance regulatory requirements without making the user experience cumbersome. Klarity Health initially focused on mental health services, but as the pandemic ended, more users expressed needs for other types of healthcare. As a result, we expanded the platform into a comprehensive healthcare platform that supports both online and in-person consultations.
Jing, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m Jing (Stacey) Yao, a product designer based in New York, passionate about creating user-centered digital experiences. I hold an MS degree in Integrated Digital Media from New York University, specializing in UI/UX design. Currently, I work at Klarity Health, where I design and optimize a healthcare platform, improving usability and enhancing patient experiences through innovative design solutions. Previously, I gained valuable experience working at a creative agency, as well as in the Web3 and fintech sectors. These diverse experiences have sharpened my ability to stay attuned to user needs, and I am committed to solving real-world challenges through design and innovation, creating value for both users and clients.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
For me, as a product designer, the most rewarding aspect is knowing that my work directly improves people’s lives. In my current role, I’ve helped make healthcare more accessible across the U.S., enabling patients to book appointments more easily and find treatments faster. Traditionally, people would have to call their family doctors to check for available appointments, but with the SaaS platform I designed at Klarity Health, they can find a doctor within two days with just a few clicks. People now also have the choice between online consultations or in-person visits. These design improvements have simplified the traditional healthcare process, especially for those in urgent need of care. I know that my work isn’t just about creating visually appealing products—it’s about building solutions that help people navigate real-world challenges and enhance their well-being.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
One of the most challenging yet rewarding projects I worked on was developing an AI-driven search feature on the HelloKlarity.com platform. The goal was to help people identify which conditions might match their symptoms and guide them to the right provider. We faced multiple challenges, from ensuring AI accuracy to maintaining a seamless user experience under tight deadlines. Despite the pressure, I led design iterations, tested AI models, and collaborated closely with the team to deliver a solution. Today, this feature helps over 80,000 patients find the right healthcare provider faster, simplifying the process for those in urgent need of care. This experience taught me that resilience is about adapting, innovating, and staying focused on solving real problems.
